At the tender age of fourteen, Nicholas Jaar’s Christmas present from his father was Ricardo Villalobos’ ‘Thé Au Harem D’Archimède.’ Sold by the CD clerk as the ‘most forward thinking electronic music album’ of the time, it was here that Nico’s passion for complicated music first began, obscuring the boundaries of minimal, tech house and techno. Ever since, the Chile born but New York resident has been a burgeoning talent right under our noses, rubbing shoulders with Wolf + Lamb at their infamous party house The Marcy Hotel, his debut ‘Student EP’ from the labels’ HQ had Seth Troxler naming him "one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop.”
At just nineteen years old, Jaar is currently working on his Clown and Sunset label which champions the sounds of like-minded cutting-edge new artists from different corners of the world and has a ten track compilation coming out this autumn which we can’t wait to get our hands on. While Jaar’s releases appear on dance music labels, his music bends and crosses many genres, and it’s impossible to put his sound into any neat little box. So with this in mind, we decided to catch up with the bright young producer and get him to shine a light on some of his favourite records of all time. He also passed us exclusive rights to a download of his 'John The Revelator' track which you can grab via the widget below...

The spirit of disco lives on in Scottish spin-star, Graeme Clark aka The Revenge. A gifted producer hailing from Glasgow, he has made grooving edits of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Love Light In Flight’ and Xavier’s ‘Do it’ and has featured on high profile labels, Under The Shade, UK’s Five20East and his vinyl only imprint, Instruments of Rapture. Rolling out smooth-tempo beats mixed with classic samples that neither your head nor feet can deny, we can’t wait to see what path Graeme takes us on with his deviant disco for fabric's dance marathon next Saturday at ‘On.’ Reaching deep into the depths of his record bag, here are five reasons why The Revenge is a must-see next weekend…
Small World Disco - Where Is The Compassion (SWDE)
A few months old but I've been loving this guy's stuff recently. A perfect mid-tempo jam from this hugely consistent producer. His tracks have that classic house vibe - strong grooves, chopped vocals and a real emotional content.
Cos & Mes feat Dr Nishimura - Heavenly Trax (Jonny Nash Remix) (ESP Institute)
A deeply emotional balearic gem from Lovefingers' label. This is in my crate for the boat party in Croatia this summer. Perfect sunset material.
Shenoda - All Ears (Mr. G Remix) (Hypercolour)
I was turned onto Mr G's productions a few years ago by Harri at the Sub Club. His tracks always have that straight-up energy and tension throughout. This one's got the genius touch of the Love & Happiness sample which works perfectly.
Homepark - On Me (3rd Strike Recordings)
I was asked to master this track a few months ago for David Griffiths' (Jisco / Under The Shade) label, and it grabbed me instantly. It's just a very simple house track but it's perfect in lots of ways and always hit's the spot when I play it.
Dirt Crew - Deep Cover (Roberto Rodriguez Remix) (Mood Music)
I've been hammering this track since Roberto passed it on at the end of last year. It's such a strong groove and when that bassline kicks in it has the power to level cities. This never leaves my crate.

The Californian beatsmith, Daedelus, known for his polite exterior, Edwardian attire and phenomenal back catalogue has been releasing music since 2001, crafting beats for emcees Radioactiveman and Busdriver as The Weather on 2003’s eponymous LP for Mush Records, before two further ‘solo’ albums for the Plug Research label led to his debut album, 'Exquisite Corpse,' for South London label Ninja Tune. Getting his ‘Exquisite...’ record blessed by the supervillain MF DOOM, Lil Sci and Prefuse 73 was an obvious achievement in itself but Alfred Darlington flipped any hip hop expectations, releasing an experimental folk album under The Long Lost alias, which saw him collaborate exclusively with his wife, Laura Darlington.
Following two further albums for Ninja Tune, ‘Denies The Day’s Demise’ and ‘Love To Make Music To’ Daedelus stands on the edge of his first release for Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint with his EP, ‘Righteous Fists Of Harmony,’ set to drop later this month.
Ahead of his set this Wednesday for RBMA presents Brainfeeder London, we asked Daedelus to share with us 5 pieces of music that are currently floating his metaphorical boat:
Starkey - Stars (feat. Anneka)
Stateside smooth slow motion; Starkey is holding it down for the US and Europe, quite a rare feat, putting his profile up with Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, and few others. I'm a fan.
Airhead & James Blake - Pembroke
No secret I love odd beats and wonky basslines, but I find the sparse melodies and haunting refrains of this song particularly beguiling, dropping it in sets is a guilty pleasure of confused ravers and deep rolling eyes affection, you know?

London-based DJ and producer Asad Rizvi is no stranger to the electronic music scene. He’s graced the decks at hundreds of venues over five continents, and unleashed a whole host of beautifully diverse releases and remixes on a multitude of the most cutting-edge, respected labels. And he’s not stopping there either...there is yet more to come from this legendary and dexterous house craftsman in the year ahead. Definitely one to keep an ear on.
Before your ears catch him getting down and deep with our Room Three system at the end of the month (27th Feb - make a note of it), we asked Asad to close his spectacled eyes and grab 10 records at random from his box. Here's the edifying and educational result, filled with sounds as exciting and unexpected as one of his artfully constructed sets. Enjoy.
Markus Homm: "Transpose" (Higrade)
Romanian-born Moscow-inhabitant Markus Homm has consistently been proving himself as one of the most reliable underground house producers of recent months. This is what I like to call Gremlin House, and this is at its finest! Wonky, wavey, libidinous sleaze.
LoSoul: "Time...Passes feat. Fadila" - Dyed Soundorum's Code Quantum Remix (Freak N Chic)
One of the many new producers whom over the last year appear to have popped out of the great blue and taken over the world. Dyed Soundorum's sleezy low-slung house grooves are so fabulously illustrated here on this sassy remix of LoSoul. Definitely one of my favourite of 2010 so far.
Crustation: “Flame” - Mood II Swing's Borderline Insanity Dub (Jive)
My obsession with all things Mood II Swing never wanes, especially when one unearths timeless grooves such as this one. Not far off from the fabulous work of Seattle’s Pezzner, yet this came out a good 13 years ago. The vocal mix still hits the spot of me as well.

Boasting a record collection that must be immoveable by now, as well as a gig diary that reads a veritable where’s-where of music venues around the globe, the Idjut Boys from East London have long been established as the original disco dons. Their signature dubby disco productions are worth their weight in gold, whilst the four quirky imprints they have nurtured (U-Star, Noid, Discfunction & Cottage) are cherished by heads around the disco circuit.
We gave the duo a chance to offer their worldly wise views on what artists always keep their heads ticking and toes tapping…
(and make sure you read after the jump for a special BBE competition!)
MAURICE FULTON
Maurice has been making great and records for years in his own, unique style. Consistently good, genre bending, music, and with reference to the production styles of the past disco masters.
