A Quick Chat With...Simon Baker + His SlothBoogie Guestmix

It's been a busy year for Simon Baker having made the move to London's concrete jungle and getting stuck in to some serious studio time. Still, like a true pro he's found time to polish off new releases for his home boys 2020 Vision following his debut album for them last year and also to produce more new material for his return to Get Physical - the German label who he shares close ties with since his early collaboration release 'Kaskazi EP' with Jamie Jones back in 2008 as well as his summer single 'Trust' featured as part of Get Physical's 'Full Body Work Out Vol 9' this year. Capturing timeless house and techno grooves, Baker is an inspiring producer for us and its compelling talents like Pezzner and John Tejada that keep his ears to the ground and interest for new electronic soundscapes so on point. Ahead of his Room One return for 10 years of Get Physical on Saturday, we grabbed five minutes with the London lad to talk us through his label history with Get Physical and the quality projects he's got coming up next. Our friends over at SlothBoogie have teamed up with Simon to mark their 27th guest mix and although Halloween is over, we're scared (in a good way) by the dancefloor damage he's going to cause in Room One this weekend and his SB mix wavering on the bumping side of house with hot tracks from Ben Pearce, Tom Bulwer and Jay Tripwire tells you why. SlothBoogie Guestmix #027 - Simon Baker’s Halloween Mix Hi Simon, how has 2012 been for you? What’s been the highlight so far? It's been a bit of a roller coaster year. I moved to London at the end of 2011, so I have been getting used to London life, setting up my studio and just getting used to my new surroundings really. All good now though, loving it. My highlight has undoubtedly been the Burning Man Festival. My first time, and definitely not my last! It was truly amazing. This Saturday you’re playing in Room One for 10 years of Get Physical.. How did you meet the GP family and what is it about their label ethos that you admire most? I couldn't pin point where I know the guys from, just around and on the scene for the past few years. I have been sending them my music and they have been liking and signing some of it. The first outing was a track called 'Kaskazi' I did with Jamie Jones. I also recently mixed their 'Full Body Work Out Volume 9' compilation. They have always stayed a solid label over the years ever since I received their first promo mix comp many moons ago. What’s your favourite Get Physical moment since you’ve been with the collective? Probably releasing 'Kaskazi' because it did really well! Or their first ever promo mix CD many years ago, I forget its name, but it had a green cover and was full of new music from DJ T. and MANDY etc. It went around all the record shops who gave it out for free to the DJ's. It was a great idea and a great mix that kicked the whole label off. What Get Physical releases can we look forward to from you next? I have a track called 'Trust' out now featuring vocals from England Brooks and my next is called 'Dreams' on the next 'Full Body Work Out 10.' Can you tell us about your upcoming projects for 2013? Sure, I have an EP due with Sasha's new label 'Last Night On Earth' called the 'Hideout EP', also looking at doing another project with Jamie Jones, as well as something in the pipeline with Lee Curtiss. I am also excited about an EP up and coming with Robert James on Culprit Records which is due next year. I am sure in between that, I will be working with my friends on 2020 Vision too at some point too. Keeping busy. What labels and artists have you looked to for inspiration this year? There are so many labels and artists these days, it's hard to keep up. My outlook is to keep my ear to the ground for true solid productions that make my ears prick up, they're the ones that inspire me. Music that stands out above the crowd. Artists like Pezzner (who is highly underrated in my opinion) and John Tejada is another, always great productions. I recently heard the new Jori Hulkonnen's album on 'My Favourite Robot Records', which is very special indeed. I am really looking forward to hearing the Pachanga Boys album which is due out soon. I only found out recently it was Superpitcher and Rebolledo. I knew there had to be someone special behind that one. Anyway, there are many, I could go on...and on! If it's new artists - keep an eye out for Bonar Bradbury. He is doing good things right now. Solid!
