A Week In The Studio With...Laura Jones

It wasn't so long ago that Laura Jones arrived back in the UK, fresh off the plane after a week of sunshine dancing at WMC in Miami. It was there that she took to the decks at one of the most sought after poolside parties going, heaving with glitz and glam and driving the masses wild with a star studded cast of names hosted by and featuring her favourite Detroit family crew, Visionquest. For those in the know Laura's coveted spot on the sparkling Miami bill comes with little surprise. Her first release on the Visionquest label arm arrived in 2011 with her 'Live A Little' track, giving her own style and grace to the deeper shades of house and techno which in a short space of time has carefully seen her creativity spread across a slew of productions for Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom and Visionquest once more earlier this year with a four track 'Sensoramic' EP irresistible to the dancefloor. Amongst this and the many highlights of Laura Jones spirited sets for us here in Farringdon there's always been one burning question we've wanted to ask her. What does a typical day in the studio for Laura involve? Since returning from Miami, she's been busy working on her latest remix for the LA label Culprit set for release next month so for one week only we've been given the up-close and personal opportunity of joining her on some hard graft studio time, before she lands back in Room One next Saturday. I'm super excited to be playing in Room One again in the coming weeks. I’ve just put the finishing touches to this remix and can’t wait to play it out on that system. I started the track by copying over the original parts into a new project in Logic. I then made sure they were all in tempo using the ‘Flex’ tool and went through each element one at a time to see which ones I liked the most and those I could hear working in a track of my own. Once I decided on the parts I wanted to use, I opened ‘Maschine’ and started to create some beats to build around the original parts. I always start from a template song which already has a lot of the basic elements and FX in there which I can then just adapt or add to each time. I find this really speeds up the production process as it saves you having to lay the same groundwork each time you make a track. A lot of the hooks in the track come from chopping up the original samples to make new riffs. I used the 'Mopho X4’ to add a sub bass and created a bleep style pattern using an analogue tone from ‘Omnisphere’, a Spectrasonics plug-in which I have used for a lot of lead synth sounds in the productions I’ve done so far. I always like to have a day away from listening to the track after finishing a rough version as I think you can lose perspective otherwise. So today was a day of working on some other new original material for forthcoming EPs of my own. With some time out, I was able to revisit the track with some perspective of what was or wasn’t quite right, make the changes and finishing touches so that it was ready to send to Culprit for approval. Here’s a screenshot of the finished project. Laura Jones returns to Room One on 20th April next to Craig Richards and Matthias Tanzmann and her remix of ‘Yellow Jacket Girl’ by Burnski & M A N I K is due for release on Culprit next month.
