Audio: A Duo of Mixes From Ralph Lawson

2011 was the 20th in a long line of big years for Back to Basics, Ralph Lawson’s seminal club night that began in Leeds at The Mint Club. As well as parties around his Yorkshire home and in London, the 2020 Vision man wanted to use the 2nd decade anniversary occasion to look back at the music that the club night was built on. Starting with the first mix here, ‘The Music Factory Years 91-94’, it’s evident that Lawson thought long and hard about those tracks, in some cases buying new vinyl that had faded or worn through to rip into his modern day Serato set up. A lot of love and labour went into this mix, something you can tell by the extensive sleeve notes he published alongside it on his site here. The ‘Music Factory…’ mix got such a great response that Ralph’s set at Back To Basic’s actual birthday required even deeper digging to make it even more special. “I released my Music Factory Years 91-94 mix on November 23rd, I was surprised by the amount of people who listened to it and realised that I couldn't repeat myself again,” Lawson admits candidly on the site. “So I dug yet deeper into my archives to find what represented a good selection of tracks played over the 20 years of the club - rather than the specific time period of The Music Factory.
