Audio: Distance - FABRICLIVE x Chestplate Mix

It’s hard to find an article concerning 140 bpm purist dubstep that doesn’t begin with some assimilation of how pop music has procured some of the obvious traits and turned it into something that you don’t actually need any bass on your stereo to listen to. Back when I went to FWD>> for the first time, or in the early days of hanging around on the top floor of the Scala when Untold and the Hessle guys were playing at Why Not?, the physicality of the music was impossible to ignore - or even talk over without shouting. The weight with which the speaker stacks sat on your midriff was tangible; it made you feel like you were a little bit constipated and it could make the inside hairs of your nose shake like how they do before a sizeable sneeze. In a modern world where midrange frequencies translate better across radio waves, some producers have compromised and gone hell for leather with their sirens and elongated ‘bass’ warbles compensating for the lack of low end, but there are still producers sticking true to what made the genre so interesting and physically impressive in the first place. People like Distance, aka Greg Sanders, remain besotted with making bass tones that feel like a big steel toe capped size 13 boot being pressed into your sternum. That’s undoubtedly why he called his label Chestplate and it’s definitely one of the reasons why we’re so excited to welcome him and his label to Room Three on Friday 24th February. Over his personal discography, which includes two full length albums for the Planet Mu label and collaborations with recent FABRICLIVE mixer Pinch (as Deleted Scenes), Sanders has plentifully explored the range of dynamics a club soundsystem can produce. It’s a dubstep cliché for sure, but listen to the mix below on laptop speakers, or even cheap in ear headphones, and you won’t ever get the true sense of the music’s spatial presence. Distance’s music and that of the producers he’s included, needs to be felt to be experienced properly – a neat advert then for the importance of your attendance to their upcoming debut takeover at the end of the month.
