Audio: Furney - FABRICLIVE x Bukem In Session Mix

If you’re into the more measured, musical spectrum of drum & bass music you’ll no doubt know James Fearnside better under the Furney name. It’s a moniker he’s performed and DJed under for a number of years now releasing music on labels like LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking, Paul SG’s Jazzsticks, Liquid V and CIA and it’s also the artist name you’ll often find alongside Bukem steering the scale and intensity of his Room Two residency here. Furney's debut release for a revitalised Good Looking was 'Drum Tools', a collaboration with MC Conrad which appeared on the other side of LTJ Bukem's first track following a three year break, 'Switch'. Since then the relationship has blossomed with Furney helping represent the richly austere vein of d&b on record and in person, something he’s doing here tomorrow night. To solidify that relationship he’s made an hour long mix that you can download/stream via the widget below... Download: Furney - FABRICLIVE x Bukem In Session Mix No tracklist given. For those who may not be acquainted with your sound, can you introduce yourself? My name is Furney, I’ve been producing since around 1995, but didn’t get a break until around 2004. I started out going to raves like Dreamscape and Pure X Hysteria at the Sanctuary in Milton Keynes and was really inspired by the sounds of LTJ Bukem. I was already close friends with MC Conrad so I always used to go out and follow what they were playing. I was hugely influenced by the sounds of artists at the time and really wanted to be able to create music that really moved the listener. Since starting out producing I have produced over 150 tracks played by all DJs across the board. Signing 50 of them with Good Looking I also have music on other labels as well such as Liquid V, C.I.A, 31 Records, Soundtrax to name a few. I have also been involved in remix projects with artists such as Danny Howells, Tango and Q Project, and Germanys P.B.K. I was asked to appear on Fabio’s BBC Radio 1 show as he informed me that he played the most music of mine out of any artist. What have you been working on recently? I have recently just hooked up with DJ Pulse and Madcap of Creative Wax records where I have just completed a remix of an old Tango track. It’s been receiving support on Radio1 from Friction and it’s also been featuring heavily in LTJ Bukem’s sets. I have also been busy working on solo projects and am about to put out a producer album with Good Looking, something I am very excited about. How did you get involved with d&b? I got involved in d&b before it became d&b. I used to listen to acid house mixtapes when I was around 10 years old. The whole ‘rave’ concept was hugely inspirational and as the music got faster from a 4/4 beat to breakbeats, I followed it. Hearing certain sounds in clubs and on the radio, and then being able to buy what I heard on vinyl was a huge thrill for me. The next step was learning how to create and put together a track. How would you describe the music you make? I would describe the music I make as a bit spaced out, uplifting, atmospheric, jazzy in places. It can be played in a club but it’s not too in your face! Can you tell us more about upcoming music from you? I’ve got 50 tracks and a producer album about to land with Good Looking Records, and am also about to collaborate with a few old legends from the scene, but I won’t say their names just yet! Quite a few solo projects are about to surface, as I’m constantly in the studio trying to find the perfect sound! Ahead of your set here at the end of the month, when you'll be joining Bukem in Room 2, what can we expect from the night? Always a good night to be had in Room two; the doors open at 10pm and it’s always rammed by 11:30. There’s a real melting pot of styles: musical drum and bass, minimal, jazzy, dancefloor and amazing MCs like GQ, Moose, Fats, Conrad, SP, Stamina, Dynamite. There are always amazing DJs that Danny selects to play and there are always smiling faces. It places the DJ on the stage area, so it’s got a totally different feel to the other nights. Catch Furney in Room Two on 29th June at Bukem in Session with LTJ Bukem, Spectrasoul, EZ Rollers and Transit Mafia.
