Audio: Jonny Dub - FABRICLIVE x Hoya:Hoya Mix

There’s long been a tendency to get over excited by parties that the wider press tells are pushing a zeitgeist. Similarly, in the internet powered constant search for that new thing, that constant strive to know about what’s future before it actually is, you end up overlooking a massive catalogue of so many sounds, so much music and so much culture. One assumes that that’s precisely why a club night like Manchester’s Hoya:Hoya exists. It’s not particularly tasking itself with being groundbreaking, speak to the duo behind it (Illum Sphere & Jonny Dub) or any of the residents (Jon K, Eclair Fifi, Lone, Krystal Klear, MC Chunky and visual artist EMN) and then tell you it’s always been more about creating a vibe and as I noted when they first made the journey to take over Room Three, Hoya is a family affair. Jonny Dub is a very integral part of harnessing that atmosphere and the musical direction of Hoya:Hoya. He’s DJed across the world sharing stages with MF Doom, Magnetic Man and Hudson Mohawke whilst he did it, but outside of his native city you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who knows of him, who doesn’t know him for Hoya. That’s not a diss; it’s a compliment and a testament to the strength of what he and his cohorts have cultivated over the last few years and this make that Dub made ahead of Hoya’s third journey to Room Three next Friday reflects that. Aside from breadth and quality of his track selection, it’s the way he segues everything together that really shines. Much like Illum, Dub posses the ability to seamlessly jump the gulf between incredibly disparate genres and styles amazingly well. Simply put you can get everything from Bjork and Massive Attack to jungle and juke via Portishead and, um, The Beatles in one of his sets and this mix really does go some way to capture the majesty of exactly that. Download: Jonny Dub – FABRICLIVE x Hoya:Hoya Mix Tracklist soon come. You can catch Jonny Dub in Room Three alongside Hoya:Hoya residents Illum Sphere and Jon K with special guests Kutmah and Hyperdub’s Ikonika. Photo: looks like it might be by Shaun Bloodworth.
