Audio: Morgan Zarate - Live At Deviation #10

Posted in Downloads Mixes on Tuesday 22nd February, 2011 by Veronica Fazzolari

Morgan Zarate, one third of cult band Spacek and a fully established beat maker and DJ in his own right, is known for effortlessly fusing electronic sounds with hip hop and soul, to the point of fooling the listener that such beats were born to be entwined with each other. Although having been making music for over 10 years, it’s only recently that a wider audience has stopped and listened in properly... something that kinda feels a bit late considering he’s worked with artists as diverse as Raphael Saaqid, Sleepy Brown and Ghostface Killah. Since returning to London after a stint in LA, he met up with Kode 9, who, impressed by some of Zarate’s raw unmixed instrumentals, signed him up for an LP deal on Hyperdub. Low and behold, before the album which is due out around June of this year, we have the warm up EP ‘Hookid.’ Released in January of this year, it went on to be a bestseller on all the right online retailers confirming not only that Morgan Zarate is an artist to pay attention to, but that these dirtier funked up electronica sounds are not going anywhere soon.

Adding a twist to what you can expect from Zarate, and highlighting just how eclectic his selection is, he’ll be joining Autonomic’s dBridge and Instra:mental in Room 3 for Club Autonomic on 18th March, where he’ll be appearing alongside Eglo boss and Rinse FM DJ, Alex Nut. Just as we were looking to announce his upcoming date we’ve come across an exceptional example of how Morgan Zarate’s sets can bring the old-school/new-school vibes, with this live recording made at Benji B’s Deviation club night’s 10th session back in 2008.
