Audio: Pinch - Recorded Live @ FABRICLIVE 17.09.2010

Whilst the genesis of Pinch's Tectonic label has been just as well discussed here as it has elsewhere on the internet, the real gravity of the impact of dub music on it's sound has only really been hinted at - outside of the obvious connotations the genre name itself has, naturally. With the label's latest project, one of its most ambitious to date, legendary dub engineer Scientist re-imagines 12 exclusive and unreleased dubplates from the scene's elite. Across Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space, the producer also known as Hopeton Brown tackles beats from DMZ's members Mala and Loefah, Tectonic mainstays Distance, Cyrus and Pinch himself as well as tracks by Guido, Kode 9 and fabric 55 artist and Skull Disco bossman, Shackleton; re-shaping them through his iconic command of effects and dub wizardry. "This project has taken over a year to get together," Pinch said."The final results are worth every minute of effort thats gone into this - this is definitely my proudest moment for Tectonic to date. The influence of dub swings around full circle!" A notion that is more than evident after a couple of listens to some of Pinch’s most recent work like 'The Boxer,' and the soon to be released 'Croydon House.' The dub sound and it’s bass weight's progeny on most of what Pinch has done with his own music and with the aesthetic of his label to date should be pretty much a given, but it’s only in wearing this dub influence and respect for its heritage so gregariously on his sleeve that parallel conclusions will be drawn by some. Whilst the low end frequencies infecting our disco week in week out are a utter staple - an essential weapon of the DJ than can cripple as much as it can entice – the pioneers who made the wrecking ball basslines the focus of their tracks, have been doing it for years. Producers like Pinch and his South London contemporaries, Loefah and Mala, work to harness the presence and force of their low end into a style more befitting contemporary dancefloors and it’s this aggravatingly orchestrated fusion of old and new masters that makes the project - and its resulting UK tour - so very, very interesting. The eagle eyed fabric blog followers amongst you might have seen the flyer, but for those missed it, we’re happy to bring word that Tectonic and the Red Bull Music Academy are bringing Scientist’s album project to life this November. Touring alongside Pinch, Loefah and Mala, Scientist will be performing with The Upsetters, who were not only Lee Scratch Perry’s house band but also form the nucleus of The Wailers, famed for their work with Bob Marley. With the London leg happening right here in Farringdon on Thursday 18th November we’ve upped a recording of Pinch’s set, from the Jack Sparrow Circadian launch back in September for your streaming enjoyment; as a sort of knowing precursor to the magnitude and sheer spectacle of the upcoming Scientist appearance. This is something that has not been done before, and likely wont be done again with such an obvious respect for the musical craft and attention to detail. Don't miss it.
