Butterz: DJ Q - FABRICLIVE x Butterz Mix

As the host of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s UKG Mix show, a weekly three hour exploration of current and future club sounds, DJ Q’s built a solid reputation. Having been with the station since 2004, when the Huddersfield born DJ was then the youngest presenter, his bountiful energy and presence backs up his upfront selections with Q aligning disparate sounds with the greatest of ease – something Q has been doing in his production work for just as long; his discography spans back to the mid noughties. Producing tracks and building remixes for people like Rusko, H20, Mark Ronson and Dizzee Rascal, Q’s hit out with his own productions like ‘You Wot,’ an exemplary 2 step banger that captures the sweat and exertion of a rave neatly. His remix of S-X’s ‘Wooooo Riddim’ is the link between him and the Butterz family, and it’s another great example of his ability to mine and flip a track’s core vibe, here taking the sparseness of the original and colouring it in with his own character: Playing here on Friday 17th June in the Butterz hosted Room Three, Q’s provided us with a tasty insight into his listening habits with this promo mix. It veers from grime through to the Midland’s own ‘bassline’ sound, a style that marries grime’s energy with a passion for pregnant basslines and a swollen kind of swagger, to the bastard 4x4 house textures of Todd Edwards and Bok Bok’s ‘Silo Pass,’ ending up in a laser guided rush through Rusko, Redlight and Royal T. More likely than not it hints at the sounds you’ll find emanating from the top deck when Elijah & Skilliam bring Q, TRC, Royal T, Trim and Merky Ace to the dance a week on Friday.
