Catching Up With..Matt Tolfrey and His fabric Promo Mix

Last year saw Matt Tolfrey hit the 5 year mark for his label Leftroom and this year is set to drive on with more consistent and quality house oriented output. He’s someone who we’ve been close with from the start of his journey working and this Saturday will see him close Room One for the first time. Everyone knows this time of day is particularly special in our disco, no more so than Tolfrey who’s taken it as his inspiration for this promo mix for Saturday looking back over the sounds of the club that have resonated with him on a deep level inspiring him back at the start of his moves towards this landmark set this weekend. Peru is one of the most beautiful, untouched places I have ever been to and it is so refreshing to go somewhere where the western world really hasn’t gotten their claws into! How important is it to get some time away from the city for you? I have realised more than ever recently that I am a city man, I am in love with London, so the time away only really reminds me of that fact! Now you're back and already really busy from the sounds of things, what are you working on? I am knee deep in my album at the moment, which is out on Leftroom in September. I have put my heart and soul into it and it is a project that not only am I excited about, but I am really proud of. What do you have planned for this year on Leftroom? We have some great releases coming up from our extended family. I don’t like to give too much away, but seriously watch this space! Can you fill me in on the inspiration behind this mix and how you've selected the tracks? This mix is a bit of a guilty pleasure actually. I thought long and hard about a theme or concept for this mix, but I didn’t want to be seen as that label owner/DJ promoting his new music, or new sound. So what I did was dig deep through all my old mixes that got me into fabric in the first place, then re-create it. Leftroom has always evolved musically as have I, so I wanted to show that I wasn’t scared to admit that we have come from one place to another. Do you enjoy doing studio mixes - what do you get creatively about these projects? They definitely get you thinking outside of the box, normally I just record myself playing in a club and use that as a mix/podcast, but this was a chance to say something in a way. You're in Room One with Leftroom singing Laura Jones - what first turned you onto her? I have known Laura for a long time, we have danced on many dancefloors around the globe, and I am looking forward to doing the same for many years to come. She is an inspiration to all of us, and she is a prime example of how passion can turn into reality through a career in dance music. What's your big ambition and plan for 2012? To quit smoking!
