Catching Up With...Tomoki + His Holic X fabric Mix

Last year Holic promoter Tomoki experienced one of his best parties to date, going off in the hub of Farringdon late on a school night. It was following the tragedy of Japan’s most powerful earthquake and tsunami last year for the event Don’t Forget, a charity rave which we set up in support of giving 100% aid to the cause. Tomoki and his Holic crew played a massive role in making the night possible, involving themselves fully in their Room Three takeover so that ravers around the globe wouldn't forget the severity of Japan's natural disaster. For those of you that don't know the history of Holic so far - Tomoki is the pioneer of its glowing party base held between London and a residency at one of Japan's most venerable night clubs - Womb providing a superb, wide-range of quality underground house and techno, respected locally and internationally. Most recently the Holic collective have been making noise for their new label venture called HOLIC TRAX with heavyweight artists like Mr.G, Kate Simko and Holic resident Tuccillo. In the run up to their Room Three return this Saturday we sat down with Tomoki to get the full low down on Holic’s latest achievements and he ramps up our anticipation with a jackin' house mix featuring the sounds of Soulphiction, Hrdvsion and Skudge. It was an amazing party - I could say one of the best in the world. All the DJ's, people who helped us and the crowd did it for love and a human care for others. It was a very special thing as everyone played for free to help people in the world, that's beautiful isn't it? It would have been impossible to do a very big night like this by ourselves and so I was overwhelmed with appreciation when fabric asked us to join this amazing project. We raised a large amount amount of money for a good cause but the money is only a small part of the recovery. The people of Japan could see the support that the rest of the world were willing to give and I think that it has given the people more courage to take more action for the revival after this tragedy. What’s been the best thing to come out of Japenese clubbing culture this year? I am not based in Japan so I might not be the best person to answer this question but I can tell you my point of view. To be honest, it has been a very tough year for Japanese clubbing culture as the old 'Fuueihou' has affected lots of clubs really badly. In some cases it dictates that venues have to shut by 1 am, you can imagine how difficult it is for them to run a party! But whenever there is adversity from a negative situation, new positive things are always born so we have lots of great new festivals, open air and day time parties. People are making lots of effort to put on parties in clubs. If we can change this old-fashioned law, club culture in Japan is only going to get stronger. What’s been the standout Holic party for you this year and why? We have had a really great year for Holic launching our label "HOLIC TRAX" this year which feels like it has taken us to the next level for sure. People can see more clearly what music we are about and they come to hear our sounds at our party. We get a real mixed crowd at our events, everyone from party animals to music nerds, clubbing beginners and beautiful girls so it is open for anyone who is up for sharing a great time & space with everybody. I guess the standout thing for me is that our crowd keeps getting more diverse which means our sound is catching on. We don't care for people who pose and try to act cool who cannot interact with others. We are always looking for great new dance music but at the same time classic sounds are also very important. You can see this from our bookings, we always mix fresh new talent and legendary artists. How are you looking forward to taking over Room Three on Saturday? fabric Saturday for me is the best club in the world so I am so excited and happy to play there. Room Three is a nice size with a great sound system and we want to bring warmer house vibes with deep, funky & disco elements in there. We are bringing TUCCILLO who had an amazing release HOLIC TRAX 002 and TOM TRAGO whose live set never disappoints me alongside our Holic residents. We will bring all of Holic's groove to Room3, you'll see people's smiles at the end of the night. Tell us about the label you launched this year: HOLIC TRAX featuring artists like Mr.G, Tuccilloand Kate Simko. How would you describe it’s ethos and roster so far? Basically we release house music which compels you to move & feel! More seriously for me, it is very important that our tunes will stand the test of time and sound fresh in the future. For this I don't want to follow trends, just trust my ear and taste. Another key point of the tunes on every release is that they have got great grooves. Our relationship between the artists & label is very important, we become a family. They give us their babies, their music, so we make sure they can trust us to look after them well. Our artists put their time, energy and love into their tunes so we need to make as much effort for them. All our artists are pretty close to me and have played for Holic before or are one of my friends. Where do you hope to see the label in five years’ time? We hope to have two offices in London & Tokyo (and Ibiza for Summer time) and still be releasing strong vinyls with quality house music. With the label comes the events and we still hope to be partying hard around the world with our extended HOLIC TRAX family. I definitely want to release some albums & compilations (VA) like HOLIC IN THE HOUSE. Let's see in five years' time. Can you tell us about the mix you’ve put together for us? Simple - some of the sort of tunes that I want to play at the Room Three takeover and unreleased tracks from HOLIC TRAX. Finally, what releases and projects should we be looking out from you next? We are really exciting to bring our vibes to fabric Saturday for the first time and already planning to do our NYE warehouse party in London. About HOLIC TRAX, we will start another project which is vinyl only, with the first release out in November. I am certain this EP will be killer as I have played it everywhere - London, Japan, Ibiza and Asia this Summer and got great feed back from dance floor on every occasion, you will love it. I have almost finished the first compilation from Holic Trax which has got tracks from great fresh artists from all over the world. I still have plenty of demos which I need to listen to so you can expect lots of news from us soon and of course I am working on my EP from HOLIC TRAX.
