March was an exciting month for us in the fabric office. Music lovers were clicking their fingers and tapping their feet, humming along to the dazzling sounds of Cobblestone Jazz’s latest offering, ‘Modern Deep Left Quartet’ (Wagon Repair)...fuelled by their wondrous sounds of their tools (which include Roland's TR-808, TR-909 and SH-101), the funk was well and truly put back in our step.
Inspired by Canada's Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate, Tyger Dhula and Colin de la Plante (aka The Mole, the latest addition to what was previously a trio) for their heady house grooves and rare deployment of machinery in warm and energetic live-jam sessions; we decided it was time to meet some of the musical legends that have influenced their unparalleled sound. Here’s a group of artists that are quite literally ‘blowing their minds’ in light of their live performance in Room One this Saturday. Get ready for your spirits to be raised and to sing to the high heavens as we meet the magnificent Cogic Organists who have talent beyond control. Starting with the incredible, two-time Grammy Award winning American gospel singer Elbernita 'Twinkie' Clark, we love this soul sister and so will you…
Dan introduced us to the Cogic style of organ playing recently and it blew our minds. All of our information regarding Cogic is gleamed from the internet, mostly Youtube videos which we are so thankful that people have been putting up. There is a surprising number of informational videos up there, tutorials and such. So here are our top Cogic organists...at the moment...
1) Elbernita 'Twinkie' Clark.
From the famous Clark sisters. She is the undisputed queen of the b3 Hammond organ. A true gospel legend.
2) Professor Derrick Jackson, Memphis.
A genius...Try and find the video where he plays Bach with his feet and I’m sure you'll agree....
3) Deryl Winston SR, San Diego.
Started playing at 14 in Seattle. They call him anointed. There is a difference between talent and anointed. You can play the organ and demons leave because you are anointed. As a bonus check out his fourteen year old son Deryl JR., also an amazing organist.
4) Melvin Crispell, North Carolina
He's got recordings that are worth checking out. This is jazz to us friends. This is jazz to us...
5) Elder Eddie Howards, Western Florida
This guy isn't really fifth, any more than Deryl is third. They are all so talented there is no sense in trying to class them...he has a unique style, really pops.
6) Trina Trine, Washington, Ohio
Look for her shout. She young and sounds very contemporary.
7) Pastor David Wright, New York
Son of Timothy Wright. Apparently he plays a Brooklyn and long island style. We like him particularly because he keeps God first. God gets the glory and he gets none...check his instructional videos
