DSB Blog Takeover: Catching Up With B.Traits

Posted in Blog Takeover In The Company Of... Digital Soundboy on Tuesday 03rd May, 2011 by Smash Gordon

On day two of our Digital Soundboy devoted blog love in we catch up with the 1st lady of DSB, BTraits. In a male dominated scene the Canadian born producer has been making waves since her early productions with MC Kay in 2005, which went under the name LTC, and with her reputation for party starting, all encompassing sets steadily building pace we shot her some questions ahead of her set this Friday.

Can you introduce yourself and DJ style?
My name is BB aka B.Traits. I hail from Canada but am currently based out of London. I produce and DJ a hybrid of bass heavy dance music. I am a part of Shy FX's Digital Soundboy Recordings collective.

What’s it like being the first and original Digital Soundgirl in the DSB fam?
Hmmmm I dunno. It’s probably the same as being anyone in the camp… Gender doesn't matter to us. It’s really all about the music and the way we get on like family.

Living in Vancouver, how different is the bass music scene there, compared to in the UK?
Incomparable! Vancouver is beautiful has a great little scene but In the UK I am able to live music 24/7. Here I am constantly being inspired, which is crucial for a new artist like me. I can go out every night of the week and hear something I've never heard before!!

What are you working on at the moment, we’ve heard you’ve recently been focusing on producing?
Yes! It’s the reason I decided to move to London; to really immerse myself in production. Currently I've got multiple projects on the go, which I like to keep secret until there’s a final polished product. I'm pretty content with sticking to singles and EPs this year. I'm still finding my niche, experimenting with as many creative outlets as possible. When I'm ready to do an album, it will be an accurate expression of how I see myself as an artist.

Something a lot of ladies envy and would love to know...how do you keep your block fringe looking so straight and effortlessly cool, even when playing the sweatiest of parties?!
My hair is naturally extremely flat and straight. So even in sweaty heat it stays like that. I cut my fringe myself! And as often as twice a week to keep it fresh and out of my eyes! Steady hands and sharp scissors…

Finally, some quickfire questions to help us get to know the DSB crew a little better:

Who is the most fun to tour with?
Shy.

Who is always the last to leave the dancefloor?
Stamina.

Who is the funniest?
Breakage.

Tell us something we might not know about one of the DSB crew?
hmmm…

What’s your favourite recent DSB release?

Youngman – ‘I Warned Ya’
