In The Company Of... Cassy

Cassy is a DJ whose has avoided trends and short-lived hype over the length of her career, instead she stands strong on a firm bed of releases on some of today’s most revered techno labels (including Ostgut and Perlon). Her story began at the beginnings of the Panorama Bar, a club whose name echoes around the world as the pinnacle of Berlin’s rich techno legacy. Cassy now posesses a body of work that includes collaborations with producers like Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, D, Dave the Hustler and Mathew Jonson, with her at times utlising her enigmatic vocals as well as getting down to the nitty gritty. But it’s really when a solo 12" comes out on her own self titled Cassy label, that you see most clearly into the soul of this producer. What really makes her tick is the unique space she's created for herself to explore her ideas and inspirations uninhibited. Ahead of our ultimate blowout this New Year’s Eve we spoke to Cassy about life, labels and the meaning of this particular celebration. How’s 2010 been for you, what’s been you’re happiest achievement? It's been a super intense year. I've worked more than ever before, travelled more and also met more people, went through some big changes in my personal life. Happiest achievement... I guess I'm happy that I survived this year with my head still screwed on. You recently came in at 18 in the RA DJ poll this year, what does that mean to you? That means that a lot of people appreciate what I'm doing. That's great! What’s been the highlight of your career so far? The highlight for me the more I go on is that I seem to be learning more and more still. Playing seems to become even more fun more enjoyablem and challenges seem to be constructive. What’s it like to have been part of something that’s become so iconic for electronic music like Panorama Bar right from the beginning? Well to me it's normal, because it happened naturally organically. I was just there at the right time, that's it. It sounds strange. I don't want to know how iconic something is, it would just make it unreal. I hate everything unreal, unless it's a fairy tale told to little children, or humour or fantasy as a form of expression, but real feels best always. Are there any emerging artists that have caught your ear recently? Daniel Stefanik. I really loved everything I heard of his this year. You have your own label ‘Cassy’, what made you want to do your own label when you’ve always had so much success with others? Because I did tracks I thought would have been too weird for anyone to release. My own label means complete freedom. I can release the silliest thing that would only be censored or not censored by myself. Just imagine you could write a book, that would not be edited or proofread by anyone, of course the tracks would be mastered, but not edited as such. Scary, no? You could make the biggest and best mistakes. My opinion uncensored like freedom of speech in music. It sounds a bit old fashioned, but it's an experiment and I want to experiment. You’ve got new releases coming up for Perlon and Ostgut, what are those tracks like, how have the different labels influence come across on them if at all? Yes they did, but not in a restrictive way in a more inspirational manner. What’s or who’s influencing you the most right now? The places I was living in this year and the people I met. We’ve had you over a few times now, how does the club influence your DJ sets? I was always scared shitless! I'm finally relaxing into it a bit... Do you have anything special planned for your NYE slot at our club? Well, I will try to make the special plan work out. I won't mention it so no one knows if it didn't work out in case it doesn't! You know what I mean...? Cassy will be hitting Room One for our New Year’s Eve party, for more info and tickets go here.
