In The Company Of... Indigo (+ FABRICLIVE Promo Mix)

Championed by people like dBridge and Illum Sphere, Manchester based producer Indigo has been solidly carving himself out a niche. Having released 6 singles last year - a lot alongside sometimes production partner Synkro - on labels like On The Edge, Smoking Session and his own Mindset imprint, 2011 is looking big for the producer who can so deftly tackle numerous genres; as adept at producing fresh thinking drum & bass as he is dubstep. Whilst his own label Mindset has released 7 singles from players like xxxy, Narcossist aka Kowton alongside giving fresh producers like HxdB and AnD a voice, Indigo has been busy, furrowing his way into the studio, deftly catching more and more ears with his work. With a track forthcoming on dBridge’s Exit label compilation, Mosaic, and an appearance this Friday in the Autonomic Room, we caught up with the producer, grabbing ourselves one hell of a promo mix in the process... Download: Indigo - FABRICLIVE Promo Mix (Tracklist after the jump) What’s good? What've you been up to since you last played down here? It’s been a busy year. Outlook [Festival] had to be the highlight, had an amazing time out there. Played in lots of places and met great people. I’m writing a lot at the moment so trying to keep my head down and not get too distracted. You're from Manchester. Do you think it shows in your approach to music at all? Do you think the tight knit scene helps? Do you think there’s a Manchester state of mind when it comes to this music? It rains a lot. Maybe that comes through!? There is a relatively slower pace than a lot of cities so that feeling of space and a more laid back lifestyle shows I suppose. The house/techno & industrial background of the city rings through in the music that comes from here for sure. I didn't grow up in the city and my influence comes from those memories and the things I experience as time goes on. I wish it would come out of holding onto the Hacienda era and what was; it takes attention away from what is happening now. There is such a vibrant scene and collection of artists across the spectrum that should be getting noted. Your own label, Mindset is very varied, releasing music from xxxy and kowton as well as Andro+Dimit. What’s your vision for it? I wanted to start a label from a young age and I wanted to follow it through. We have all known each other for a long time. It was just a way of getting a few records out of my own releasing music that I liked from friends and artists I come across on the way. What else is coming up on the label? I don't have any plans at the moment. I'm glad how the releases turned out and where the artists have taken off from but now I’m working on other projects. I much prefer the creative to the business side of things. Maybe something will follow on from where I left off in the future... You've got a tune on the forthcoming Mosaic compilation. How did you link with dBridge? I have followed his music since I ever started collecting records. I heard the [Autonomic] podcasts and sent a few tunes over. I didn't hear anything for a few months then I got a message from him saying that he wanted to take one... it wasn't unti a while later that l I knew it would be part of the album. I’ve made more tunes since then as a new project with Synkro, which he has shown an interest in too. I feel honoured to be part of it; to be amongst that roster of artists is quite overwhelming. Do you feel a pressure being on his label? I love making music and feel great when others make a connection to it. I try not to let expectations get in the way. I'm sure the music I make, play and love coincides with dBridge's otherwise he wouldn’t have got me involved. I feel like things come full circle. It is more exciting than anything else. So many different aspects of electronic and live music are merging together. It's a great time to be in the thick of it. Tell us a little about the mix you've put together for us... I have put together an hour of different textures and beats. Cold, sparse sounds for the winter nights that have all of a sudden crept up on us. I had lots of fun putting it together; I could have done a 2 hour mix, I found it so hard to cut down! I have an attention span that doesn't go very far so I like to change things up a bit. I am looking forward to coming to play at the club again especially as part of the Autonomic room. Oh and a zoot and a brew will accompany the mix nicely!
