Introducing.. BNJMN + His fabric Promo Mix

For those in the know the five letters which make up BNJMN stand for a lot in our rapidly changing electronic music landscape. The UK producer has been dubbed a ‘future sound’ which boils down to the fact you won’t be able to put him in a box or tie him to a genre. Just know his influences of Aphex Twin, Theo Parrish and Efdemin make him no stranger to eclectic but powerful track selections in his live or DJ set up and his immeasurable production skills have in a short time revealed two impressive full-length artist albums ‘Plastic World’ and ‘Black Square’ on esteemed Amsterdam imprint Rush Hour. Next Saturday, in a debut live show BNJMN joins Jozif, Russ Yallop and Luca C to turn Room Three on its head and to give you something physical till then here’s his brand new promo mix, which he describes as, “the first half being more what I'd play in my sets and the second half less focused on dancefloor orientated material.” Listen up and read on to get a unique perspective of BNJMN both in front of and behind the scenes... Hey BNJMN. Good to meet you. Where is home for you? Hi. Home for me at the moment is London. I moved up at the start of the year and am enjoying it so far, although my musical output has suffered a little bit since moving up. It’s taken a while to adjust to new surrounding and there's always good nights going on in London. I'm originally from Bournemouth on the south coast. Last year you released yourself very strong with two LPs on Rush Hour, joining artists like Cosmin TRG and Tom Trago on the esteemed Dutch imprint. What was the decision to release on Rush Hour and to stay put for your second LP? I sent them a demo a few years ago and they really liked the material. It was as simple as that really. The material on the first album was recorded a few years before I even contacted them, so by the time that came out I already had enough to release the second album soon after. Thankfully they liked the direction I took with the second album. We don’t expect you to compare the two albums but how do you articulate your approach to each of them. Is there a particular mood or setting you see them fitting into too? Like I said the first album was recorded quite a while ago, whilst the material to Black Square was recorded mostly last year. So I feel a bit closer to the Black Square material. I'd say the first album was a lot more naive, as I'd just gotten into the more experimental side of techno/house music and didn't have any pre conceived ideas about what I was doing. The second album was a bit more concrete in terms of what I was going for, but there was still a massive element of experimentalism. Did you receive any praise/criticism from artists &music heads that you’ve taken on board for the future? I've had some people that I really look up to say nice things about the music, which is really nice but at the same time I don't let it affect what I'm doing. I still make music for myself first and foremost. What artists/ labels do you look to for a hybrid of sounds in house, techno and dubstep totally authentic to anything else there right now? The mix will hopefully show the kind of stuff I'm feeling at the moment. Tell us about your live set up. How much of time is spent live on the stage to in the DJ box? I'm generally playing live more than DJ'ing at the moment. But generally I have more fun DJ'ing and playing other people's music rather than my own, so I hope to do more of that in future. What are some of the most awe-inspiring live shows you’ve seen of late? The magic mountain high show at eco festival in Madrid was really great. Also John Heckle's live set was really impressive. What goals have you set yourself for this year after two LPs already in the bag last year? Hopefully to keep playing shows and improving my music over time, there are no new releases planned currently but I'm always working on new material. How are you looking forward to playing in Room Three live with jozif, Luca C and Russ Yallop next Saturday? It should be fun, my music is pretty different to what those guys are doing so hopefully it goes down ok. We heard you’re looking to start up your own label. What challenges if any do you think you’ll be facing? What music philosophy comes under its banner? At the moment that has taken a back seat, but that's something I'm going to aim to do in the future. I make a lot of different types of music so it may be an outlet for other things besides house/techno. Can you describe the mix you’ve done for us? It’s basically a bunch of tracks I'm feeling at the moment. The first half being more what I'd play in my sets and the second half less focused on dancefloor orientated material. What record never leaves your bag? I don't play records, but one track I really enjoy playing out is Jaydee's Plastic Dreams Post rave remedy? Full English breakfast Most you’ve ever spent on a record? I don't think I've ever spent more than £20 on a record. One thing you can’t without? Tea Best memory to date playing as BNJMN? My favourite gig so far was DJ'ing at a small club called Doris in Florence. Panorama Bar was also an amazing experience.
