Introducing... Danny Benedettini + His fabric Promo Mix

Danny Benedettini’s unique talent as a producer quickly caught the attention of techno mavericks Magda, Marc Houle and Troy Pierce for their new avant-garde Berlin based label, Items & Things. His debut EP release on the label, ‘Tell Me Quietly’, spans genres bordering on techno and disco (nu and old) with a distinctly industrial underpinning that’s evocative of the sound Items & Things have carved out over their 13+ releases to date. Joining Magda, Hearthrob and Mike Sevito in a late night Room One affair on May 5th where he’ll be spinning techno curveballs, we spoke to Danny for the first time to get the lowdown on his story so far and to grab his dark horse of a promo mix... DOWNLOAD: Danny Benedettini - fabric Promo Mix Tell us a bit about yourself and your musical background? I grew up in a small village by the sea in Italy, called Cervia. As you may have already read I come from a punk/rock music background. I started to hear it at high school when I was 13/14 years old. Later on, I started to go to electronic music festivals, like Timewarp, Dissonanze, Vision and more. I did a lot of partying and I was always looking for music I heard over there. I ordered a lot of vinyl and when I got them I had no where I could play that music- so I decided to buy my first console in those years. It was around 2004 when friends of mine gave me a mixed CD by Run Stop Restore and somehow it touched me. Your first release was on Momento Records, shortly followed by Items & Things last year with your first EP release. How did you get your break? I was sending a lot of music to Magda when Fabrizio Maurizi, owner of Memento asked me to release some tracks on his label because Magda wasn't interested at that time. The year after I moved myself to Berlin and focused myself into making something fresh to send to Items & Things. What’s it like working with Magda, Marc Houle and Troy Pierce – people who are all techno legends in their own right. What music advise have they given you so far? I try to keep my eyes open when I am with them, every time there’s something new to discover somehow. We have so much fun with old edits, bootlegs and stuff like that, we're so addicted. In your opinion, how is Items & Things different from other techno labels out there? Well, I’m not 100% sure, the music seems to continue in development...nothing dies or comes up. Everything grows together. What’s your studio set up? I'm basically working with Ableton and sometime Logic as well. I started years ago with VST meanwhile I was trying to buy some little monsters like Tetra, Korg Monopoly and real drums. I'm trying to get in the studio every afternoon and night because I work with my family in the morning at a marble company. You remixed Troy Pierce ‘Slap In The Space’ last year. Who’s tracks would you love to remix and vice versa? Interesting question... I would have to say Black Devil Disco or something from Emperor Machine and Madato. We met years ago and now we're great friends. I'd like one day to get a rework by him or to make a proper remix of his songs. Tell us about your upcoming music projects? I’m finishing some remixes right now there's one for Miro Pajic on his label which should come out very soon. I did once for Pan/Tone on a new Canadian Label, it's called ‘We have Friends’ music and there's the last one in the lab for Nebes with Limikola Records. How are you looking forward to your Room One debut next month? I’m so excited, my hands are shakin' already because it's such an honour for me play there. What are you most looking forward to about the rest of this year both in your personal life and in the music world? I’m so excited to work with Madato - we started to work together last summer in Berlin and we got an interesting sound. I really believe in Madato’s music, we met years ago and now we're great friends. We read your cult horror film icon is Lloyd Kaufman. Tell us about your interest for horror films? When I was really young I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and when they went to the bed, I watched TV till late in the night. I guess, it was my first approach with horror movies and I was only 9 or 10 years old so every film I watched was terrifying for me but I couldn't have that stop me from watching. Maybe there's something in our minds and it makes us glued to the screen, you can feel something and make it yours or maybe there's no reason people watch horror movies. It’s like people choosing to eat bacon flavoured ice cream... Catch Danny in Room One on Saturday 5th May.
