Introducing: Jaymo & Andy George and their Moda party

Jaymo & Andy George are two names you might have heard if you’re a regular listener of BBC Radio 1, or if you’re a resident of Lincolnshire. The two young bucks began their Moda party up in Lincoln, playing in dimly lit bars to up to 300 punters, but now it’s become a brand in its own right with a successful run of residencies in Ibiza and beyond. After their Essential Mix for Radio 1 bought them to the attention of the bosses, they were given a slot on the station’s In New DJs We Trust rotation where their enthusiasm for electro, house and techno saw them broadcast their unique take on music to a global listenership. Taking over our Room Two for the first time we caught up with Andy to introduce Moda as a concept and provide an insight into the way they work. He also blessed us with an exclusive remix to pass out. The track below is the D.I.M. remix of Jaymo & Andy’s debut single, ‘Hold Me Back,’ the original of which featured J2K on vocals. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for an opportunity to win copies of the compilation discussed below coming shortly... Download: Jaymo & Andy George – Hold Me Back (D.I.M. Remix) MODA. You’ve gone from tiny back rooms to main rooms at places like We Love @ Space. Can you fill in the blanks for someone who might not have heard of the party? What made you start something? How did it grow? I guess it was a sort of snowball effect. We just kept on trying to take things to the next level, whether it be moving from a 300 capacity club (in leafy Lincoln) to a 1600 capacity warehouse for an Essential Mix with Hot Chip, we’ve never settled down and always aimed higher. It’s our 3rd season in Ibiza, last year we curated room 2 of Pete Tong’s club, Wonderland and spent every Sunday at one of our favourite clubs, Space. This year we’re on the Sunset Terrace for We Love @ Space and it’s already been some of our best gigs of the past 12 months. What were the big breaks? Jay and I did an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 back in April 2008, it was recorded live from Moda; so that was a really big break for us, and helped us start our relationship with Radio 1. We kicked things off in London just under 2 years ago (officially) with a string of low-key party’s in East London with secret guests like Annie Mac, Fake Blood, Zinc, Count & Sinden, Solo, Riva Staar and Alex Metric. It was a road-block and it soon became apparent that we needed a bigger space. After a massive event at the Coronet, we settled down at XOYO and have had 2 amazing party’s with A-Trak, Aeroplane, Mylo and a load of amazing new underground talent (Clouds, Screendeath, Bxentric) You’ve just released Volume 1, your first compilation. What was it that made you want to put out a physical product comp? Has it always been a dream to do so? It was the culmination of two years of hard work! There’s still something seriously cool about seeing your compilation in a high-street store and we’re all collectors of music – in a digital age, having a physical product was important for us. What do the artists on it represent to you? CD 1 is more about indie, electronica and disco. Some amazing bands we’ve uncovered over these past few months, and lots of new material from the label. A brand new artist called Toy Tigers who we’re super excited about, as well as a remix from Alex Metric of Fenech-Soler, a new band from Australia called Strange Talk, and a massive summer anthem from our very good Italian friend His Majesty Andre, which Armand Van Helden has been playing to death! CD 2 is a club mix from us. It kicks off with disco, moves through some more housey bits and some electro then ends on 3am techno - that’s a pretty good indication of what you can expect at fabric. 90% of the tracks on the compilation are exclusive and have been made especially for the CD, so it sounds mega fresh and features some of the biggest producers in the game; D.I.M, Strip Steve & Das Glow from Boys Noize, Mumbai Science, Screendeath and Russ Chimes. Are they a good indication of what people can hear on your radio show, at your nights? Yeah exactly, CD 2 is more of what we play in the clubs, and CD 1 features a load of bands/acts you might see playing live at Moda, or on our Radio 1 show. Tell us how the radio show came about... After the Essential Mix we recorded a few videos for Radio 1 at the venue, we joked around saying we were free to fill in for Pete Tong any time they wanted, they mentioned we should demo for a show called In New DJs We Trust. After they saw the video’s of us they asked us to demo, we did, and after about the 3rd demo we got the show. It was something we both had basically dreamed of but never expected to happen. As producers what can the public expect from you? You seem to be big on the remix circuit... This year we’re focussing on original material, we just put out a 4 track EP called ‘Night Music’ – which is exactly what it is! Four big club records made for the dancefloor. We’re working on a few remixes of songs we’re really into but we’re half way through our next original EP, so the focus for this year is really our own music. This will be the first time you’ve taken over a room here at fabric, what does that mean to you guys? fabric’s a club which has meant loads to us in the past 5 or 6 years. When I was at Uni in London we used to go and see people like Touche and Speaker Junk... and Crookers played the 3rd room, and didn’t even care what was going in the main room! Since then we’ve been lucky enough to DJ there a few times and there’s just such a great vibe in the place. What have you got in store? We’ve invited a bunch of guys that we’re mad into right now. Surkin and Bobmo have just launched a new label called Marble and released 2 EPs under their alias, Marble Players. They make club music for the future with some slightly garage influences. Along with Sam Tiba and MYD, part of the Club Cheval crew from Paris, they’re making seriously forward thinking jams, along with Canblaster, and it will be the first time they’ve played for Moda. It wouldn’t be our room without the faithful Moda All Stars. Uber-producer Tom Staar, label manager Craig Duranti & us! It’s going to go off… Moda take over Room Two this Friday.
