Introducing... Paul SG & his FABRICLIVE x Bukem In Session Mix

In speaking to Paul SG it’s obvious from the get go how passionate he is about his place within the genre of drum & bass. Based in Vienna he’s a staple part of the Good Looking diet and LTJ Bukem has been housing sets from SG at his Bukem In Session nights regularly for some time now. They're cut from the same cloth musically, both keen to employ and infuse a wide range of instrumentation into their 170bpm music. As his bio states: “SG’s jazz-inflected vibes and Moogy basslines sang to Bukem, and it wasn’t long before the liquid innovator began playing Paul’s platters on a weekly basis.” With the support in place and releases on an array of labels SG took the leap and begat his on Jazzsticks label, whose output features heavily in this promotional mix he made ahead of his appearance in Room Two a week on Friday... Download: Paul SG – FABRICLIVE x Bukem In Session Mix Can you introduce yourself for those people who maybe haven’t heard of you or your music before? I am Paul SG, originally hailing from the south west of Germany now residing in Vienna/Austria. I have had releases on a string of different labels including some of the biggest labels within the musical sector of drum & bass such as Good Looking, Innerground, Liquid V, Fokuz, Phunkfiction, Human Elements as well as on my own Imprint, Jazzsticks Recordings. I’m working very closely with Danny (Bukem) for the last couple of years. I had three tracks on his FABRICLIVE CD and his Good Looking label is also the place where I will release a major part of my musical work in the future. What got you interested in making music in the first place? My father is a semi-professional flute player who always had the dream of making music for a living and somehow I’m living his dream which is now a beautiful base for our relationship. I started very early at the age of 6 or 7 with musical education for kids and quickly got into the world of drums and percussion. I played in several bands, combos & groups when I was a teenager and all this lead me to where I am today really: a lover of good, honest, soulful music. What got you hooked on drum & bass? Most probably the rhythms and the tempo of our music. It all started when I heard some of these mid-nineties old school-amen-tunes and this totally caught me as a drummer - although I found out about d&b quite late compared with many people I’m working with nowadays. It must have been around 2002/2003 when I started buying vinyl and played the first little gigs in my hometown. You’ve played a bunch of times for Bukem in Session, would you say that is the type of d&b you enjoy the most, the musical end of the spectrum? What are you looking for in a tune? Yes I would definitely say that this is my type of d&b. fabric´s crowd has got to be one of the best educated crowds worldwide when it comes to what we are doing. They know the sound, the tunes and they understand that we don´t need loud kicks and snares followed by a midrange-driven bassline to make them dance. Its music for your mind, body and soul (in no particular order). A tune for me needs to have rolling beats, good percussion. It can be a faceless, bassy roller or a super musical sample driven song but I need to hear drumwork! What’s the scene like out in Austria for d&b? The scene is pretty healthy although my sound is not very popular over here, though there are still a couple of crews and promoters who do support and enjoy the musical side of drum & bass. I find it difficult to compare myself with others as a DJ/producer as my whole musical and personal background is totally different. The only similarity between my music and the rest of d&b is the tempo most of the time! At the end of the day I must say that the Austrian d&b scene is very healthy with lots of upcoming artists as well as legends like Day and Nuskool and d&b wunderkids Camo & Crooked. I rarely go out to events here in Vienna but if you wanna live and celebrate d&b - this is not the worst place for you! Can you tell us a bit about the mix you put together for us? Yes, with pleasure. I put together a 30 minute mix including lots of forthcoming tracks on Jazzsticks. All these tracks are in my bag at the moment and you will hear some of it at Bukem in Session later this month at fabric. We have some big plans in the making for Jazzsticks and this sound is very connected with what I do for Good Looking, which is why most of the tracks are also in Mr. Bukem´s box. In case you are wondering why I didn't choose some of my forthcoming GL tracks, make sure you come to fabric on April 27th - live is the thing!
