New Years Eve Countdown: Martin Buttrich fabric Promo Mix

When we asked Martin Buttrich if he could spare some time to catch up on interview before he plays a gravitating live show for us on New Years Eve, we had no real idea just how busy the man behind Desolat had been and what an intense 2013 he has already planned ahead. We feel honoured to have Martin announce some of his most ambitious goals to date in our words shared below; hot off the press in this interview you will find his very first discussions of them. Detailing news on two album projects - one of those being an 'alternative electronic project, less for the dance floor' with Konrad Black, as well as revealing talks of studio session time with Loco Dice early next year. We'll let Martin tell you all himself below and going beyond the call of duty, he's reworked his own cuts exclusively in this rare mix for us- which if we're lucky enough, we'll get to hear moments of live from him on NYE. "It’s a little mix with eight tracks – some remixes and own productions. I’ve made a few dub mixes of songs that do not exist like that and that I only normally perform live at gigs. So it is sort of special and exclusive. I wanted to do something different and not just end up queuing songs of mine one after each other. I hope fabric fans will like it!" DOWNLOAD: Martin Buttrich fabric Promo Mix Hey Martin. What have you been up to this past year? Can you give us some of your highlights? I played a lot of gigs this past year and I didn’t spend as much time in the studio as I originally wanted to. I also moved to LA and had to deal with a lot of construction issues in my new studio, problems with US customs and getting my European equipment to even run. But it’s all finally solved now! There’s been a bunch of great moments, but I am sure the best is yet to come and the NYE gig at fabric will be definitely one of the highlights from 2012. You’re set to release your first original production in almost two years, why has it been so long and what can we expect to hear? Firstly, I’ve got a bunch of EP's that I am currently looking for some labels for – a “spiritual home” for these releases, let’s say – but I haven’t come close to a decision on that matter yet. I’ve also been working on an album together with Konrad Black that is almost finished (I am really looking forward to this release), which is less for the dance floor and more of an alternative electronic project. Plus I have done a couple of remixes for the likes of Layo & Bushwacka, tINI and Stacey Pullen to name a few. End of next summer will also hopefully see the light of my second long player – that is the plan anyway. Now that I think about it, I did spend quite some time in the studio last year. Can you tell us about the Stacey Pullen remix, ‘Any Which Way’ you’ve done? Has the Detroit techno purveyor been an influence on you? It was a tough one. It took me quite some time to even make it into the studio to do it but I think it turned out pretty good. It will be released on Blackflag (Stacey’s label) end of February. Do you ever have to pinch yourself at the Desolat success story? How would you describe the past five years co-running with Loco Dice? Dice and I started the label from our own perspective and based on our own experiences. We wanted to create a platform, where we could release music that we like, share it with the world and do things right for the artists. I think that it's this honest, enthusiastic approach that played a role in the overall success of the label. Next we'll celebrate our anniversary with a ‘5 Years Desolat’ release, a 2x12" and a mix CD by Loco Dice. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it onto this compilation with a track of my own track due to lack of time but the last 5 years have been incredibly fun, exciting, involved a lot of hard work, and I'm really glad to see the label growing. As we’ve just said you work closely with Dice but you also have special working relationships with Konrad Black and Timo Maas. You were famously awarded a Grammy Nomination for one of your remix tracks together with Timo [Tori Amos ‘Don't Make Me Come To Vegas’]. Can you tell us a bit about working as the producer for these talents? Well all those guys passed the level of ‘talent’ a long, long time ago. They are professional artists in their own right. Every working process is very different from each other, they have their own way of working being more or less active. You always start sourcing out who’s good at what, and then you just let it flow. It’s a very rewarding process, I have to say. What other forthcoming projects do you want to share with us? I have started an album together with Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann for our project that we started last year called ‘Better Lost Than Stupid.’ The project is still very much being developed – we have an idea of what we want to do and it will ultimately lead to a stage performance with the three of us together but right now we are focusing on the music. More than that I cannot reveal, but hopefully this will be done by the end of this summer. I also have some studio sessions with Dice penciled in for March, where we hopefully will be finishing his second long player. Finally, how are you looking forward to playing live for NYE? What does it mean to celebrate 2013 with fabric and the rest of the artists on the bill? I am really excited. It’s a top line up and I never had a bad gig – or time for that matter – at fabric. It will be up there with the rest of the peaks, as I already mentioned. Martin Buttrich will be performing live in Room One this New Year's Eve, for more info and tickets go here.
