Record Box Peek: Martinez Brothers

There is a heightened feeling of connection between The Martinez Brothers, not just because they are blood brothers from the Bronx but also because of the amplified elements of groove and rhythm that they share in their music; blending disco and soul cuts with head-nodding New York house rhythms packed with energy to burn. Growing up, The Martinez Brothers were influenced by their father’s role in the vibrant disco scene movement at notorious dance meccas to be Paradise Garage and The Loft and true house legend of the 80's Timmy Regisford’s Kiss FM show, on heavy rotation on the family stereo. It wasn't long until the brothers found their own dance turf at the internationally acclaimed Club Shelter parties in their home city, confessing they were some of the youngest kids under its roof looking up to the club’s resident Regisford spinning soulful house music in a thriving club atmosphere and meeting the late great Larry Levan and Paradise Garage’s Victor Rosado. It's rare moments like these that most of us can only dream of experiencing that saw the music brothers destined for success and soon enough that pivotal moment came in 90's when fixture of the dance scene Dennis Ferrer released their first record, Objektivity in 2007. One Records and Saved Records are amongst the leading house and techno staples who currently represent The Martinez Brothers but their tastes and influences go extensively beyond the four-to-the-floor format and in this one-off Record Box Peek we get a unique mash up of Jay Z, Filsonik and KC Flight with a story behind each selection, all before they land in Room Two on 11th May. Guilty pleasure to listen to? Zapp & Roger-Computer Love - Such a cheesy record, but the talk box hook just get us every time! Record that reminds you of the Bronx? Hector Lavoe - Calle Luna Calle Sol - IT's a gritty classic salsa track that reminds us of the gritty BX streets. We'll never forget when our Aunt put us on this when we were younger. Two favourite records to go back to back with currently? Portable - A Deeper Love (Tofu Productions Dub) Vs Steve Silk Hurley - Stop Playin' (Instrumental) - Something about those bells! Record that reminds you of New York club, Shelter? Filsonik - Can U - Timmy used to play this record for twenty minutes, layering in and out of things with it, classic track by our boy. Record that reminds you of your childhood? Jay Z - Give It To Me - We used to sing the raps to this at school with friends, it's one of those tunes you just had to know every single word. Record you wish you’d made? TW Funkmasters- Love Money - The bassline and the drums alone on this record are crazy, for them alone we're envious. Classic record. Record for serenading? Jon B-They Don't Know - Strictly for a romantic night in and some private serenading. Favourite classic house track? KC Flight - Lets Get Jazzy - First heard this on a Larry Levan mix, blew our minds, still in rotation today. Record that relaxes you? Lenny White - I'll See You Soon - When the day is done, and you need to unwind, throw this on. On 11th May, The Martinez Brothers join One Records boss team Subb-an & Adam Shelton B2B and Samu.l in Room Two. For more info and tickets visit our event listings.
