Sasha's Most Wanted: The Moog Taurus II

Our Most Wanted series is a chance for artists to dig a little deeper and think to come up with one thing they either really want or simply can't live without. Ahead of his performance in Room One on 27th September, Sasha dug deep in his studio and decided that the thing he most wants is the awesome bass power of the Moog Taurus II... “The original Moog Taurus was all one piece. You basically had a keyboard but you played it with your feet, so the keys were really massive. The original one was all in one but this one was created, I think because somebody like Billy Joel or one of those kind of 70’s big musicians wanted to be able to tweak it while they were playing. So they made this [Taurus II] that came in two pieces: the keyboard itself was on the floor and then there was a pole and then this would sit on top of your piano when you were playing at your gigs. It meant you could adjust it while you were playing to produce different tones and stuff like that. Because the other one would just be sat on the floor, you couldn’t really adjust it while you were playing.
"I never ever need another sound for bass ever again."
““This is my beloved Moog Taurus II (below), which I bought off the internet for 400 dollars - but it was broken... the keyboard itself was absolutely broken to pieces! I actually sold that back on eBay and admittedly someone bought it off of me for 150 dollars, so mine actually ended up costing me 250 dollars - which is fantastic. The best money I have ever spent in the studio. I never ever need another sound for bass ever again. “There is something that happens when you close the filter down on this and you overdrive the oscillators slightly – it makes the fattest bass! I mean on some of the records when I first started making tracks with it, there was so much bass on the record that I had to completely re-master them and redo them because there is something so ridiculously fierce about it. “They’ve since come out with a new little Minitaur, which is fantastic; I think it is about 500 dollars. It does sound very good; I've got one and I like using it but when you compare it to this old beauty, there is just nothing that comes close to the size of the bass. When you record it and you look at the waveform in the studio and on your computer it is completely black and solid. It is amazing!”
