After giving us the gift of his stupidly fre$h D&B mix last week, we decided to climb into Zero T's head (it's a crazy place to be... believe) and find out what makes him tick. Turns out it's not the crisp amen breaks or warm rolling basslines you'll find in his tunes - he's got infinite knowledge in electrified boogie and sleazy freaked-out funk. But it's best left for him, and his Irish accent, to explain. Warm up your computer speakers and get cozy... Zero T has now taken over this blog.
"When I was a young boy, Growing up in the ghetto, Hanging out on corners, Singin' with the fellas, Lookin' for the cute chicks, Trying to find a bit of fun, Looking for some trouble, Or anyone who'll give me some...I was young and crazy, In the ghetto Didn't know what my life would be....." and then I heard Rick James (B*tch) pumping out the ghettoblaster when I was a kid in Dublin and my love affair with sleazy late 70's - early 80's funk had begun!
You know the style, Mr. James, Gap Band, Edwin Birdsong, Chic etc... post-disco , pre 80's new romanticism, it had the perfect combination of organic funk fusion and new synthesis, which was/is literally music to my ears! Makes me wanna go rollerskating! This was the club soundtrack for the early 80's in the US and very much the basis of the burgeoning acid house scene. The likes of Fabio, Frost, Bryan G, Danny Bukem etc were all spinning this stuff when I was still in diapers! Check a compilation called Pure Groove, UK CD comp...
That CD's got more gold than Fort Knox!! GO BUY IT TODAY!!
