Sleeve Notes: Classic Through the Eyes of Severino

Ever since our first sleeve notes feature on the blog with Norman Nodge in celebration of his Berghain 6. release, we’ve been waiting for the next opportunity to engage on another track by track journey with an esteemed musical selector on our blog. This time round, we took the opportunity to go deep with Classic Recordings and Horse Meat Disco associate Severino on the topic of his 'Through The Eyes Of' compilation for Classic last year. Severino's affectionate ear for the Classic Recordings sound was first instigated in the 90's when he began importing the label’s 12"s to the record stores of his native Italy, it was through banding that 'boompty boomp' sound across the nation he soon started his lifelong comradeship to Classic Chicago chieftains Derrick Carter and Luke Solomun. Then at the age of 26, Sev made the move to London in pursuit of another vinyl distribution role and soon became well known on the party circuit running his Happy Families parties in Shoreditch in collaboration with ex-Jockey Slut editor Rob Wood which soon became a monthly phenomenon here in Farringdon too. It was then only a matter of time before the fun-loving Horse Meat Disco crew caught wind Sev's breath-taking vinyl knowledge and signed him up as party resident, an event that he still is a fond fixture of well as maintaining himself as regular fixture on the London underground network. In the studio, the local selector’s output with fellow Italian Nico De Ceglia has also been proving fruitful for him, naming themselves ‘Hyena Stomp’ the pair provided a weighty anchorage to Sev’s compilation for Classic Recordings at the end of last year as well as being called on to remix for Tracy Thorn and Tevo Howard. Seeing as he’ll be joining the big boss Derrick Carter in Room One this weekend we thought it apt time for him to look back in celebration at his track selections for ‘Classic Through The Eyes Of Severino’ as we look forward to him bringing his eclectic take on house to Room One this Saturday. Nail - Time For Change: I thought this track would make a lovely start. It's very mellow and dreamy. It's got an amazing vibe and reminds me of 90's Balearic tracks like Alone by Italian artist Don Carlos. LIT - Brown Dwarf (Hyena Stomp Red Giant Remix): This is taken from Nico De Ceglia's and our Hyena Stomp project. It's pumping and has been played a lot apparently. It seems that piano melody works. The Magi - Luke's Surprise: I always respect and love Luke's stuff. He has an edge on everything he does. Style of Eye feat. Freeda - You Got That (What!? Luv Dub): This is all about Classic and especially that Chicago vibe. Lots of groove and chopped samples. LoSoul - Lies (Rob Mello No Ears Instrumental): Rob Mello is my man. His productions are timeless! He always creates a magical vibe around him. This track is just dreamy but catchy and great on the dancefloor everytime. Rednail Kidz +1 - I Think Of You (Herbert's Trouser Dub): The way Herbert chopped this track is genius! It seems to go beyond so many of the dubstep and breaky productions out there. Trademarq - Dirty Girlz (DC's One Man / One Army Dub): Of course we have to mention the Chicago Don, Derrick Carter! It's just one of those tracks perfect for a party house party crowd. Joshua - Echo Chamber (Joshua's Dubwise Mix): So groovy and spacey like everybody in San Francisco. Robbie Hardkiss - Everything is Changing (Hyena Stomp Mama Remix): Hyena Stomp Mama's other remix which is a sort of tribute to the funky artist called Prince. 3rd Face - Canto Della Liberta (KiNK Remix): Italy's finest and a traditional Neapolitan sample in here with a electro Kink remix. Louis Botella - Clause 1: Louis has always been a bit reserved but he is just doing his own thing in a proper style. Scoper & Bubba - I'm Satisfied (Brett's World of Nonsense Mix): Brett is dirty here. So sexy, that bass and groove. I only recently it discovered thanks to Jason Kinkade in NYC. I love the little electro sample and the promise "When in Rome" has that kind of early 80s feel to it. Rob Mello - Happiness (Happy Club Mix): Again Rob brings such an uplifting vibe to the end of the journey and in a very happy moment takes you to a lovely finale. For more info and tickets go here.
