Steve Bicknell On: LOST Presents spacebase

We’re already familiar with the impressive legacy of LOST parties in London and how it set itself up as one of the capital’s most infamous and pioneering techno events. Undeniably it was all about the four four, big proper techno. Then came spacebase, a smaller event and more relaxed where its DJs could spin an alternative section from their record collection; an opportunity to break from the conforms of the scale of LOST and the demands a full on warehouse party throws up. We can only hazard a guess as to how techno pioneer and the driving force behind Model 500, Juan Atkins, will go about his track selection come Saturday when spacebase comes to Room Three, but we can count on the fact that this is a pretty special opportunity to experience his DJ prowess in such a free and intimate setting. Joining him is Toru, a long time friend of the LOST crew who became firmly established as a DJ behind the desk of Vinyl Junkies – historically one of the major hubs of vinyl and dance music culture pre-internet. And of course, the resident and founder of the party himself, Steve Bicknell, will be purveying some of his favourite sounds as part of the lineup. He’s kindly written an introduction to spacebase for our blog, chronicling its roots and ethos, as well as providing us with five tracks that for him, sum up the legacy of the night. We started with one-off Christmas parties in addition to our main LOST events and the ethos with spacebase is intimate but with a killer system, a bit like a house party rather than a full on warehouse allnighter. The concept grew into regular spacebase nights with a stand alone identity. Having established a reputation, it's often a misconception that certain DJs only play or like the style of music for which they're known. i.e. techno DJs only play techno, well Jeff Mills threw down 'White Christmas', unedited, at a spacebase Christmas party, not many saw that one coming!
