Om Unit is one of those producers who seems to be double jointed. He’s as adept at making neck snapping hip hop as he is trickling up into the higher tempos with his jungle/juke hybrids and more notably, he’s received a lot of critical acclaim for both. His new EP on Civil Music, Aeolian, came out yesterday and parts of it epitomize his duality, especially the tellingly monikered ‘Slowfast Matrix’. ‘Ulysses’ trundles to a slow mo house kind of tempo but its percussion, the speed of the swirling riff and the high hats drive into overtime making it feel like it’s working a whole lot quicker than it actually is but then ‘Fumes’ is the type of pure slow stomp that the world first heard on Om Unit’s ‘Pop Lock’ remix of Joker’s ‘Digidesign’.
Ahead of his appearance on Friday at the Civil Music takeover of Room Three the label are streaming the EP in full over on their facebook page but we’ve got the Reso remix of ‘Ulysses’ here for you to stream. It shows you that yep, Reso (who is also performing in the Civil Music room along with Starkey and Om Unit) likes jittery breakbeats and layering drums so they skit across everything.
Civil are also running a competition through their facebook to win tickets to FABRICLIVE this Friday and an astounding array of vinyl from the three headliners - which includes the new Om Unit EP that we’ve been talking up, plus the two that precede it, both of Starkeys Space Traitor EPs and all three of Reso’s EPs that he’s released on the label to date. So that’s a pair of tickets to the show plus no less than eight records.
Simply jump to their FB page now to enter the competition (you simply have to share the picture on your own profile to put yourself into the running for the prize).
Winners will be notified by email. Please ensure you can attend the event upon entering.
