WYS!: Martinez WYS! Promo Mix

Representing Sweden’s capacity for house and techno, Martinez comes armed with killer club selections, backed by a fleet of musical outfits including Get Physical, Audiomatique and his own conducted imprints Out of Orbit and Re:Connected. Set to land on London ground this weekend when he joins forces with WetYourSelf! for their weekly Sunday night session, he suitably prepares for his upcoming set by having a quick chat and  firing over an exclusive new mix. Listen: WYS: Martinez WYS! Promo Mix WYS!: Great to have you back at the club... Martinez: Great to be back, definitely one of my favourite rooms to play in Europe, so very much looking forward to it. WYS: You were one of the very first guests at WYS!, can you pick out any memorable moments and explain how you feel the party has developed. M: Yes that is true, I even remember playing for them back when they had their party's at that Aquarium Club. The party has developed a lot over the last few years, the music profile is getting stronger with each year and the guys have really managed to create a good brand for the night. I think the move to fabric gave the party a more mature feeling and a slightly broader audience. WYS: Your DJing set up has changed over the last few years, going from using a lot of computer technology to primarily a vinyl set up, what encouraged you to change tact? M: I wouldn't say that I used a lot of computer technology. I was using Traktor Scratch for some time with control vinyls, because I was never good with the CD players and Traktor allowed me to play all the music I couldn't get on vinyl but still with that feeling of playing records, plus it was much lighter when travelling. I was very interested in the future technology of DJing for a long time and I still kind of am. I felt more and more detached to the music when getting into all of that and I felt for my part that technology belonged more to a live act or in the studio. I came to a point where I felt it was becoming to be digital and so the playlists just grew bigger and bigger and then there was no order to the music. I found it hard to find certain tracks when I was playing and I got really tired of setting up the stuff and having a computer in the DJ booth. I did a few vinyl gigs at a local club here in Copenhagen and coming back to that feeling, I realised this is how I learned to DJ and this how I get in inspired to keep playing. Using vinyl allowed me much more freedom and more attention to the music. Today I also think there is more and more interesting music coming out on vinyl again, which is good. WYS: You have a new label at the moment, can you tell us how this came about and what your ambitions are for it? M: Concealed Sounds, which is my new label, came about because I needed a personal platform for my sound. I wanted to have a place where I could feel completely free to be myself and release the music I believe in. I will release about a 12" record every 3 months. It will mainly be music from myself and close circle of friends that make a special sound that I believe in. This first two releases are by myself, but on the second one we had a fantastic remix from the mysterious London based duo, Sylphe. The third release will be by Michael Melchner and we have lots of interesting music in the pipeline. We do only releases on vinyl as I think this kind of music sounds best on the that format. WYS: You travel a lot, yet you’ve always remained a Copenhagen resident, can you tell us what keeps you rooted, despite having travelled all over the world? M: It's because I travel all over the world that Copenhagen feels like a good home base. The city is quite small, so it feels very cosy because you know almost everyone. It's very vibrant and on going but not too hectic or stressful. I like it as base to come home to. WYS: Where do you see yourself in ten years time? M: No idea… WYS: What are some of the most unusual gigs you have played? M: We ended up playing at an after party located in an old swinger-club in Long Island City, New York with some friends a while back, that was a very unusual location indeed.
