Youtube Diggin' - Hrdvsion

There’s something enchanting about two friends setting out and instigating their own label on the premise of putting out exactly what they want, when they want. Its even more heartwarming when just a few years later that very endeavour becomes one of the worlds must loved and respected avant-garde techno labels. This is the abridged back story of Wagon Repair - a label founded by Mathew Jonson and Konrad Black in 2004 - and now over 50 releases later, the label continues to push boundaries and charm fans.

Techno adventures seem to flow through the very blood of Mathew Jonson and thankfully, for the wider world it’s a trait his brother Nathan shares. Together as Midnight Operator they will be performing in our club as the first time for the first time on the 12th of February. So far, there’s only been a single release from the brotherly duo and a few Youtube videos, taken roughly in dingy club like surroundings - but we have it from good authority that nothing you will have seen or heard is any indication as what to expect for their first performance together here.

Nathan alone is no stranger to shaking the brickwork of our walls, as Hrdvsion with his own brand of glitched out electronica fused with twisted techno live set, coming from a diverse musical background releasing on super undergound experimental labels like London based disco_r.dance and Balkan Vinyl, as well as his main home on Wagon Repair. We thought we’d ask Nathan to give us a bit more of a guide and insight into what shaped his multi faceted sound and pinged some words at him for him to respond through the medium of Youtube video. We got quite the audible experience.

Innovator:

CYBOTRON 'Alleys Of Your Mind'

that is all...

Favourite Sound:

For the last few years I have been getting more and more turned on by really loopy loose funky acid house like Kerrier District:

I've always had a hard time "feeling" a lot of electronic music to the point of dancing, but if it's gotta be a straight beat, this is the shit that will always get my head bobbing!!

Biggest inspiration:

I would probably say Squarepusher was my biggest influence and inspiration with his constant boundary pushing and changing sound. It seems as though he is very true to himself when writing music.

Favourite track of 2010:

I really have been loving James Blake. His first few EP's are what I imagine to be only possible within someone’s dream and to be something not possible to exist in real life. This year I really loved his ‘CMYK’ track on R&S.

Worst. Track. Ever.

I remember when first being immersed into the rave culture as a teenager, everything I heard sounded new and fresh. It was until this song that I realized I wasn't going to like just any old song.

Thankfully I can't seem to find it on Youtube so no one else’s ears will be tortured they way mine were, but it was a techno remix of Dire Straits ‘Money For Nothing’ and it was one of the most painful things I have ever heard.

Soundtrack to your youth

I think this one is definitely a pick for both me and Mat, Chaka Khan – ‘Ain’t Nobody’:

This came off the movie ‘Breakin’ soundtrack that definitely influenced us in our music. We were pretty obsessed with all this breakdance/b-boy shit growing up. Definitely pushed me in the direction of loving Kraftwerk and Model 500 type electronics!

Hrdvsion

My favorite tune (of mine) at the moment is ‘Captivated Heart.’ I love playing it for people and I love to see the reaction it gets when friends play it out! No matter what kind of ridiculously nerdy music I can make, in a club it can't compare to hands in the air!

Mathew Jonson

A favorite of my bro....hmmm that's tough. I have a ton of his music that is unreleased...s ooooo something that's on youtube? ;) I think ‘Ghost's In The AI’ is an incredibly underrated and extremely badass tune! When the pads drop out and you're just left with rock'n'roll guitar solo basslines! So so so wicked!

Hrdvsion will be performing alongside Mathew Jonson as Midnight Operator on the 12th February in Room One. For more info and tickets go here.
