Youtube Digging With Zombie Disco Squad

Posted in Interviews Music Videos on Wednesday 04th November, 2009 by Danna Takako

Zombie Disco Squad have an unquestionable ability to find the hot ish - everything they touch is pure fire. This is especially the case with their latest creation - Playing Around Again (on JRo's Made to Play), a definitive glance into their endless (and unpredictable) record crates. With ample digging skills on display for their selection of the 2-disc journey - from the naughty romps of Oliver $ to the searing sounds of Riva Starr - the duo stand tall as ambassadors of the new house sound...fingers firmly on pulse. Get a small insight into their unhinged creative process as they talk us through some of their favourite internet finds.

Oh, and be sure to come see them reveal their latest musical discoveries in Room Three this Friday. Banger alert.

LUCAS' TOP 5

What do you get if you cross Booka Shade with Johannesberg? The answer is DJ Cleo of course! This guy is part of the new wave of South African house music, Mujava pipped him to the post by becoming the poster boy for the scene, I would have loved the opportunity to see Cleo rock. Umchakka beats coupled with electro house melodies and live trumpets make for a remarkable track that somehow feels familiar, even on first listening.

Before I discovered electronic music I used to listen to a lot of Hardcore and Bay Area punk - I still go back to this kind of music from time to times. Ian Mackaye was a dude and I love how he can sing something that sounds both heartfelt and completely out of tune! Fugazi are up there with The Ramones and Talking Heads as one of my favourite bands ever.

We have been singing the praises of the Dutch for a long time now, it seems like most of the producers are still isolated into the Amsterdam scene, most playing cheesy, mainstream gigs. I was speaking to Bart B More the other day and he was saying how much he enjoys playing the more underground gigs across Europe, surprised to see so much love from the ‘blog scene’. Musically it can be a lucky draw with this stuff, most of it is hugely commercial and obvious, but there is something about the way the Dutch make grooves and manage to get everything so damn loud that makes me wiggle in my seat.

Okay, I have said it before and I will say it again and again…WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LIKE ABOUT BAILE FUNK?. That’s 4.16 of pure ass shaking right there!! The Brazilian TV channels are off the hook!!! I watch this daily with my cup of tea and muesli in the morning. The MC is an old school dude called Catra (at least it sounds like him), he is also one of my favourites, which makes this video even more special.

Stimming makes music that I want to make, listening to his album makes me feel like there is not much point in trying anymore. His songs are intricate to the point of being weirdly mathematical and organic, every part seems to have a life of its own. He changed the way I thought about arrangement and what makes a dance music song….I played this at Panorama once and almost fainted the buildup was so good (just wait til 8.00!). Oh and make sure you listen with good speakers/headphones!

NAT'S TOP 5

This track makes me want to dress in riding gear (very popular in the warehouse in Chicago in the 80's), sniff pcp and dance like a maniac - what a song j-j-j-j-j-a-a-a-a-c-c-c-c-k-k-k-k.

I have head this track maybe 4 million times and still love it.

The 808 kick in this song makes me a little aroused. Reminds me of when I was high on cheap weed as a teen in New York.

The best rapper ever- Tupac lovers beware!

Ah-oh work it work it, ah-oh...
