Buraka Som Sistema’s debut LP ‘Black Diamond’ shot into the public consciousness in late 2008. Introducing Angola’s raw kuduro sound to a digital world increasingly attentive to global niches, Buraka brought local originators such as Znobia and Petty alongside global stars like M.I.A. and Kano, and married these talents with their own progressive, yet respectful, vision for kuduro. The track ‘Sound of Kuduro’ quickly became an anthem, whilst ‘Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)’ crossed over to top pop charts in Europe, despite being the abrasive antithesis of stereotypical Europop. Following glowing reviews from publications as diverse as The Observer, DJ Mag, Uncut and Pitchfork, the band then went on to gain recognition for their explosive live show, gaining plaudits as a standout act at Coachella, Sonar and Roskilde.

2010-11 has seen Buraka Som Sistema touring a slimmed-down DJ set-up, whilst members J-Wow, Riot, Conductor & Kalaf worked on solo projects and commenced work on the follow-up album and live show, and following a hyperbolically-received MP3 mixtape, contribution to the FABRICLIVE mix series and Essential Mix. Amongst the biggest weapons in the Buraka DJ arsenal is a selection of remixes from the ‘Black Diamond’ LP, commissioned from contacts in their extensive address book for exclusive use in their sets. Brodinski, L-Vis 1990, D1, Mastiksoul, Foamo, Roulet, Bert On Beats, Nic Sarno and Buraka’s own DJ Riot all make contributions ranging between house, dubstep and electro – most of which have never been available individually before.
