Audio: Introducing fresh Hospital signing, Unglued

Searching for Unglued online doesn’t give much away about the young drum & bass artist. What we do know is that he’s the latest signing on the Hospital roster, who last year caught the whole camp’s attention with a bootleg of High Contrast’s classic, If We Ever. He’s since appeared on two of the label’s recent compilations, with debut single Chicken in a Spacesuit lined up to drop next month. The Brighton-based producer has started playing with some of his formative inspirations since the label got hold of his music, and soon debuts with us for our Hospitality in the Dock after party next weekend. We asked him to introduce himself ahead of the date, so he recorded a mix covering the jungle and drum & bass sounds that have influenced him most. Download: Unglued FABRICLIVE x Hospitality Promo Mix How and where was the mix recorded? I wanted to give a bit of insight into my influences past and present, as well as a bit of a history of drum & bass. I started it off with an old intelligent/jungle section and the mix begins with a new track I created as an homage to that sound. I recorded it around my mate Wheeler’s house on his CDJs, as I only actually own 1210s at my place! From where did you source most of the records? A lot of the old jungle stuff that I began with is ripped from my vinyl collection, as you can’t download a lot of them digitally as far as I’m aware. I still try my best to visit my local record store in Brighton (big ups RK Bass!), but as I’ve just got back from travelling I’m mega skint and haven’t been in a while. The later part of the mix moves into more modern styles with a few dubs and forthcoming bits. Brighton has quite a rich arts scene, was it here that you first got into drum & bass? So the first time I ever got into drum & bass was when I was shown it by my uncle Stoppy, but there’s always a lot going on in Brighton. I remember going to see Sub Focus when I was 18 at what was then Digital in Brighton, that really confirmed my interest in trying to make the music and become more involved in the scene. Do you remember the moment you first discovered Hospital Records? When I was about 12 or something, Stoppy showed me High Contrast’s debut album True Colours. When I used to go round he’d show me how to mix vinyl and play me all these tunes. It’s kind of weird that it’s gone full circle and that was one of the first drum & bass LPs I remember vividly listening to, and now he’s playing my Bootleg of his track If We Ever which has been popping off… quite surreal! How did you find out you were getting signed to the label? Originally it started with me sending a house tune to Nu:Tone to get mastered. He really liked it and asked me if I had been working on any other music, so I fired across a few rough sketches of some D&B tunes I had been making. After lots of discussion and interest I sent a 10” dubplate of Bootstrap Bill to Hospital HQ as a demo and it kind of just built up from there. Tony [Coleman, London Elektricity] was really interested so Bootstrap Bill was released in January as part of the Sick Music 2018 compilation – it got a great reaction so I came up to London for a meeting about signing and that was that! What plans do you have for the rest of the year? I have a single dropping very soon in April called Chicken in a Spacesuit, which is a pretty crazy name. I’m also working towards my debut album which should come out next year some time. I’m opening the show at Hospitality in the Dock, and closing the after party for my debut at fabric, so it’s going to be a serious haul! It’s also my birthday that day so after a fair few drinks I think I might need a power nap in between! Hospitality On The Beach in Croatia is going to be a great one too, I get to take my girlfriend and a load of mates are coming with me, so really excited for that!
