Marcel Dettmann (fabric 77)

As you may or may not be aware, every time we release an artist's CD on either of our ongoing mix series (fabric/FABRICLIVE) there happens a lot of behind the scenes conversations that are all part of the preparation. One of these is a tailor constructed artist biography that's written to give the press extra background information on the artist in question: where they were born, where they grew up, how they got into music, etc etc. In truth, these biographies often become quite enlightening documents in their own right and from now on, in the week before we release the mixes to the public, we'll be publishing the biographies here to give you, our faithful readership, the exact same additional insight.

Marcel Dettmann (fabric 77)

I was born in Pößneck, Thuringia / Germany, and grew up in Fürstenwalde (60 kilometers from Berlin).

My grandma was a music professor at high school in Frankfurt (East Germany), so everyone in the family was influenced by her. Every time we went to see my grandparents we would sing and play instruments. At home we also had the radio on all the time, if there was no record playing, and my mother would always dance around in the whole apartment.

Before the wall came down it was everyone but Joy Division, Madonna or Michael Jackson – bands like OMD, Depeche Mode, etc and later on The Cure, New Order, Psyche, DAF, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb…

We did not have a CD player but we had a record player, so I obviously just bought vinyl and at some point I started recording mix tapes. In 1993 I started to organize parties in my hometown with my friends. After school and after a few breakups of apprenticeships, I ran a small record store in the house of my mother. That was between 1995 and 1998 and I financed my record collection with this job.

"The mix is mostly based on unreleased MDR demo tracks, which I’ve carried around with me for the last few years." - Marcel Dettmann

Labels I’ve been involved with are my own Marcel Dettmann Records (MDR) since 2006, Answer Code Request (ACR), Ostgut Ton (Berghain club label). I’ve done a lot of remixes, including Dillon, Ellen Allien, Emika, Fever Ray, Junior Boys, Laibach, Moderat, Vedomir etc.

I used to play Room One at Wet Yourself! on Sundays and I loved it from the beginning. Later on I always played Room Two. And then in the last 3 years we’ve put on MDR nights.

I mixed it at home with 2 CD players, as most of the tracks are not available on vinyl yet. The mix is mostly based on unreleased MDR demo tracks, which I’ve carried around with me for the last few years. For example the ROD track, I’ve had this one for at least 3 years. Now it is finally a good opportunity to release those tracks and they will all come out on MDR.

I am looking forward to a lot of great clubs/festivals and of course the CD release party on the 30th August at fabric. There are also a couple of remixes coming soon…
