Win Scuba's DJ KiCKS

Scuba’s ascension to the level that he, and his steadfast Hotflush imprint, is at now has been swift. Uncompromising in his work rate, both at signing material for the label and at producing his own music - he’s reportedly working on album number three this winter – there really isn’t that much of a break before something he’s involved in hits the press. Whether its Scuba giving a globally respected act like Mount Kimbie or Sepalcure the platform to release a debut artist album or him flipping his production style on the head and releasing a three track EP of almost strict house (like he did with his ‘Adrenaline’ 12” recently); he’s constantly working, forever building his associated discography.

Between album and 12” projects Scuba (aka Paul Rose) has mixed an instalment of !K7’s respected DJ KiCKs series, an accolade that’s been previously handled by artists like Four Tet, James Holden, Kode 9, Apparat and Motor City Drum Ensemble amongst others, and it clearly defines his current sound parameters. You could attribute Rose’s leaning towards more 4x4 rhythms to his relocation to Berlin, but honestly, the connective dots probably stem from a lot further into the immersive realms of club music, as Scuba’s exposed himself and been exposed to different lineups, different situations and ultimately different styles of music.

Reflecting that clinical trait that's present in his music, Rose's DJ KiCKS mix is exceptionally serious, aligning music from techno artists like Surgeon or Marcel Dettmann with that newer breed of producers lumped under the ‘bass music’ umbrella (people like Addison Groove, the Instra:mental duo and the wider Hotflush roster).

Ahead of his appearance in Room One for the next Tectonic takeover, we’ve been blessed with a few copies to give away to lucky readers.
