Crate Diggin': Matt Tolfrey Shares His EC1 Inspired Remixes

Matt Tolfrey has been playing down our locale for over a decade now, at a space that even before that time has been formative to his own musical programming as a raver before becoming DJ. It's a pretty nice touch to know that we have been so important to an artist that now we look up to ourselves and to find out that all this time he has been working the influence of our disco into his own output in a series of 'EC1 Remixes' is pretty humbling. So ahead of his return to EC1 this coming weekend (23rd April) Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey has taken some time to present and talk around his EC1 inspired remixes... Matt Tolfrey: Everyone has a piece of EC1 in them. fabric has always been more or a home for me, more than just a gig. From day one you feel like there is something going on there, something’s about to happen. It’s not like any other club you come across on tour, it has it’s place and that place is EC1. I often wondered why producers that I admired named their remixes, Derrick Carter with his BHQs and Kerri Chandler with his Kaoz 6:23. It got me thinking. Remix requests come in all the time, if I like it, let’s give it a different angle. So I imagined myself on the dance floor, in Room One at fabric soaking it up, the bass, the vibes, the people. I gave myself a new platform to play with by just visualising what it would feel like in fabric, in EC1. And the series begins…

Lil Mark - Runaway (Matt Tolfrey EC1 Mix) - Bump Music

I always loved hearing Craig [Richards] and Lee [Burridge] playing breakbeat at the old Tyrant nights at fabric and this vocal was just asking for it. Don’t ignore it to early, it’s got a cheeky twist.

Emde - Circles (Matt Tolfrey EC1 Mix) - Prismat Recordings

I had been talking about Detroit all day when I did this remix, and it comes through… Really headsy roller with an 808 framework to it.

jozif - Good Man (Matt Tolfrey EC1 Mix) - Culprit

This is one for the floaters, when you need a little breather on the dancefloor. Massive love to my Droog brothers over in LA, always bringing the sunshine via our local main stay, and my right hand man jozif.

Gavin Herlihy - Was I Supposed To (Matt Tolfrey EC1 Mix) - Leftroom

This is where i started experimenting a little with rhythms and groove. Not everything has to be in a 4/4, and London’s sound always breaks things up.

Huxley & Sam Russo - Don’t Understand (Matt Tolfrey EC1 Mix) - Leftroom

This remix was pieced together after a heavy Villalobos session at fabric, mind blown, feet hurting, inspiration flowing. He really is a prime example to everyone out there, that there really isn’t any rules! Photo: Nick Ensing
