Crate Diggin’: Mella Dee from Mista Men’s Top 5 Garage Records

Less of a flavour of the day, more of a way of life, UK garage is a style of music that’s long been hard to ignore. Brushing the mainstream with the output of its more exuberant purveyors, it’s more the scene’s underbelly that’s long had a hold on a lot of people with the leaner, darker productions notably inspiring the birth of the dubstep scene. It’s a style we’re whole heartedly celebrating in Room One this Friday night at the launch party of FABRICLIVE 71: DJ EZ, our latest mix CD made by probably the most influential garage DJ going. So ahead of the launch we asked Mella Dee of Mista Men (pictured above left) – a duo profoundly influenced by the style - to pick out some of his favourite 2-step weapons, so we could start looking forward to Friday with a little bit more of an informed soundtrack. Please note, the picks are presented in no particular order. Listen to them all in a YouTube playlist here. Groove Chronicles - Stone Cold “The coldest drums in the game. Anything involving EL-B is gonna be an instant winner for me, and the breakdown where it gets dark is one of the best moments in UKG, ever.” Zed Bias - Been Here Before “Such an anthem for me, it’s easily up there as the best 2-step track from Bias. That dark garage vibe really has been a big inspiration.” DJ Faz - Destiny “This has gotta be one of my favourite 4x4 bits, it’s so bumpy and never fails to go off when I play it anywhere. One of those where it would surprise me to find anyone who disliked it.” Ordinary People - Baby You Make My Heart Sing “This one doesn't need much said about it, it’s just such a banger. That bumpy 4x4 sound hits such a sweet spot for me.” Operator & Baffled - Things Are Never “More of that bumpy 4x4 vibe but it’s such a timeless track. It always sounds so fresh to me, especially with the fact that so much stuff right now clearly has a huge influence from this kind of a track.”
