Crate Diggin': SP:MC's Top 5 Dillinja Productions

Instead of imparting yet more of our own, endless, opinions on you - something we take pride in doing day in day out - we wanted to ask someone who in themselves is a pretty studious devotee to the science behind drum & bass. SP:MC (a producer and emcee we’ve profiled on these pages before) was one of the very first people to come to mind, with his near encyclopaedic knowledge of break beats and, well, his undying love of the producer we’re here to focus on, Dillinja. As we’ve written before “it’s impossible not to gloss over the impact and influence Dillinja has had on d&b over his career.” He’s one of those producers whose name commands an absolute and very real respect in, and outside of the core scene. His commitment to the genre found him setting up Valve alongside Lemon D, a record label and a world renowned soundsystem capable of handling the frequencial capacity of the tunes he was producing. It’s an often cited fact that by the time he was 23 Dillinja had 50 vinyl releases under his belt, a lot of which we’re self-manufactured and distributed, and since that young age he’s pledged that much of his time to drum & bass that his impact on the scene is still felt today. With that in mind and ahead of Dillinja’s slated 90s Set in Room Two on Friday 20th September, we asked SP to pick his five favourite Dillinja productions. You can watch them all as a YouTube playlist here. 5. Heavyweight Vol.2 – Side A Not many people are aware that Dillinja made this one. Credited to DJ RuffKutt for the knowledge which was recently confirmed by Mr. Francis himself... An absolute killer! 4. Dillinja - Fluid (Test Recordings) It was a hard choice between this and 'Accurist' as I couldn't justify putting two Test Recordings tunes in the Top 5! I went with this as it sums up Dillinja nicely for me – a beautiful intro, into vicious drums, then a brutally low bassline! It's over when the chord cuts and it rolls out. I’ve seen this one cause trouble on the dance floor: a lot of elbows and spilt drinks! 3. Dillinja - The Angels Fell (Metalheadz) This tune is just under 20 years old but it still gets drawn by some of the finest selectors, and still sounds fresh. A credit to just how unrivalled some of Dillinja's music really is. 2. Dillinja - Silver Blade (Prototype) Same as with 'The Angels Fell', this still gets drawn and reloaded to this day - arguably one of the greatest D&B tracks of all time. Timeless music and classic Dillinja! Shout to Boymerang for the break! 1. Dillinja - Warrior (Logic) This is my number 1 simply because it's my favorite Dillinja track of all time! A lush intro, amazing drum work and a killer bassline! The second and third drops deliver too... I love this tune like family! In addition, a note from SP:MC: Narrowing down my favourite Dillinja tracks to just 5 was frankly an impossible task. I could have easily done a Top 20 from the 90s alone so, honourable mentions must go to: Acid Track Violent Killa Deadly Deeps Subs Tear Down da Whole Place Heavenly Bass Lionheart You don't Know (Original & Remix) No Man Gangsta Promise Brutal Bass Jah Know Ya Big Light Years Weapon of Choice So Damn Tuff Vicious Tronik Funk Organic Funk Vicious Hard Noize Sovereign Melody Fusion
