DSB Blog Takeover: Catching Up With Youngman

The appropriately monikered young vocalist, Youngman, has blazed a trail across genres as a vocalist. Performing with his voice since a tender age he turned his back on a promising DJ career to focus on performing with his vocal chords and having collaborated with Drumsound & Bassline Smith, BBC Radio’s Chrissy Chris and Benga it seems like the Derby born singer made a well advised decision. Performing on Friday as part of Shy FX’s DSB Soundsystem, the super talented emcee will join Donaeo and Stamina MC to provide the on mic patter, so we caught up with him in an attempt to get him to reveal a little bit more about himself... So... who is Youngman? Describe yourself in 10 words? Just a guy from Derby with aspirations of world domination... We know that you started off DJing, what made you switch to being a vocalist? That’s right. It wasn’t like I had some miraculous epiphany or anything! I just remember getting loads of love from performing at local talent shows so I decided to get in the studio and record a few tracks. Before I knew it they were getting released and I was getting quite a lot of vocal bookings so I decided to put the DJing to one side and focus on the vocals. You don’t limit your vocal style to a specific genre, being able to cover beats from dubstep to RnB, but which sound do you feel most at home with? I get asked this a lot but to be honest music as a whole comes really naturally to me. I’ve grown up listening to everything and I just do what feels natural to me regardless of the genre. Good music is good music you know? Do you like karaoke? We’re assuming you must be more than pretty darn good at it...what would be your choice of tune to choon along to? Funny you should ask. I’ve only ever done karaoke once. I few years ago whilst in Ibiza I bumped into a singer friend of mine in this karoake bar, and next thing I knew we were on stage performing a duet of ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams. I remember coming off stage (well it was more like a step) and him saying ‘remind me never to do karaoke with you again’! Ironically, he has gone on to be a successful pop singer! #guesswho What’s coming up that we should be keeping an ear out for? I’m featured on System’s ‘Hold It’ EP which is forthcoming on DSB any day, and then I’ve got my new single ‘Tear It Out’ / ‘I Warned Ya’ both of which are produced by Benga and will be released on the 18th May. Finally, some quickfire questions to help us get to know the DSB crew a little better: Who is the most fun to tour with? Tough. We all naturally play different roles and I think that’s what makes it so fun when we’re all together! #digifamily Who is always the last to leave the dancefloor? Stamina (No pun intended) haha... Who is the funniest? Breakage is a funny guy… Tell us something we might not know about one of the DSB crew? PAUSE. What’s your favourite recent DSB release? Breakage Feat. Jess Mills 'Fighting Fire' #emotional
