Eyeballin: Dreadnought - Bathed In Light

i-D Online premiered video footage from Dreadnought late last week, pairing the ragged visual display that illustrates their ‘Bathed In Light’ track alongside a short Q&A. In it we learn more about the Dreadnought project, a collaboration between Samuel Chase aka the voice behind Samuel & The Dragon, a band that seemed to dissipate after the release of their debut single ‘Diamonds On A Boat,’ and underground bass music iconoclast Jack Dunning, aka Untold; and their debut four track release of industrious tones, guitar drones and strangled textures. “The ‘Caroline EP’ was about trying to get as close as possible to the colours and tone,” they tell i-D. “The most potent way of doing this was to paint the picture with as few tools as possible. By limiting chords and the typical movement of a song’s structure, there were very few places for one go to fake expression. So, it spins around itself in the most irritating way. Not always irritating. Sometimes it’s rather a pleasure to listen back. Not that either of those emotions are particularly relevant.” By its nature the Dreadnought sound is almost destructive; it’s limited in poise by the stringent layering and brash elements used to construct it. Chase’s vocals wail and soar over Dunning’s production work, which retains elements of the music he’s released as Untold - ‘Meterotie’ especially flexes to a similar dancefloor tempo, though the rising distortion builds to a more natural ‘song’ type crescendo around the vocals, upping the performance spectacle. It’s dark, almost gothic in its energy, defined by the brutish power and lip bitingly aggressive production. Dreadnought - Caroline EP Of the visual work Dreadnought say: “We are extremely fortunate to work with Callum Bain, he is like another member of Dreadnought and the visual element to the EP is as relevant as the music. He knows what we are trying to do, so it is a rather easy process.” Catch Dreadnought playing live in Room Two this Friday night. PLEASE NOTE: Advance tickets have sold out.
