How Was 2012 For You? Catching Up With Marcus Intalex

Having lived through a couple of his most visible years to date with his debut artist album 21 last year and his explosion in more techno minded circles as Treviono, you’ll probably have heard something from Marcus Intalex’s hard drive over the last 12 months or so. He’s worked pretty hard to prove that his artistry and passion for electronic music can translate to different speeds and move different crowds with releases under the Trevino guise appearing on labels like [nakedlunch], Martyn’s 3024, Ben Klock’s Klockworks, Craig Richards’ The Nothing Special, Appleblim’s Apple Pips and his own Revolve:r imprint. Whilst a lot of newcomers might come to his faster productions through his Trevino material, a lot of people out there know him for his thunderously pertinent drum & bass output as Intalex and today - ahead of his appearance at the 150th Playaz event at FABRICLIVE on 27th December - it’s exactly that that we’re celebrating, as we present you with this measured and deftly-segued, downloadable d&b mix from the man himself… Download Marcus Intalex - FABRICLIVE Promo Mix (Dec 2012) How was 2012 for you? Mostly great… a lot less travelling this year has meant I have had plenty of studio time so without question it’s been my most productive year as a producer. Most of my gigs have been great also… I’ve really enjoyed all things work related this year. Apart from doing interviews that is… [laughs] Obviously you’ve been receiving a lot of praise for your work as Trevino, and this mix serves as a timely little reminder of you potency as a DJ at the higher tempos. How have you found running these dual identities? It’s not been a problem at all. It makes things more interesting and has given me a new energy for DJing and producing. In my mind the two sounds don't mix so that’s why I started the Trevino project. Whatever the tempo the policy is, it’s just a chance to play underground music that I love and to enjoy doing that for as long as I possibly can. Do you enjoy the change of Trevino? Yeah, I’m loving it! I’m finding tons of music and producers for the first time, there’s so much great music out there. Do you think a change in focus has helped or modified you in terms of the drum & bass you’re playing? Both in guess... My attitude has changed a little. I guess I worry less about where drum & bass is going and really focus on the part of it I love. There is still enough good stuff out there to keep me excited and I seriously hope it stays like that. What I will have to do though is work harder in drum & bass so people don't think I’ve ditched Intalex to be Trevino. It’s certainly not the case, I have music lined up for both Soul:R and Metalheadz and intend to write more d&b tracks as the new year progresses. What keeps you coming back to d&b do you think? I love it man and I always will. When it’s done right there is no better club music. I mean DRS’ album that you put out recently was pushing the more exploratory side of it considering that it was a vocal led project, are you still looking to push the boundaries with what you are releasing on your labels? Yeah, sure. I’ve got 3 or 4 great releases lined up for the label next year and all of them are, in my eyes, still pushing it forward. I’m all about supporting the music I love. Whether that means it’s something mainstream or something that only appeals to the niches, it doesn't matter. I’ll just keep doing it the way I’ve done it for years. It works.
