A Story Of Friendship With Chimpo & Barely Legal

Ahead of the awaited FABRICLIVE leg of our 16th Birthday and the promise of Kurupt FM’s Champagne Steamrooms takeover, we hit up two of its performers, Chimpo and Barely Legal to see if they could offer us something insightful ahead of the occasion. Considering their friendshing, their propensity for back to back sets and the years they’ve spent spanning the club and festival circuit together, we figured they might have a couple stories they’d like to share. What we actually got out of them was a heartfelt and hilarious account of everything from how they met to where they are now…

The first time they met:

Chimpo: Er, I'm not 100% percent this is the exact timeline but I'll have a go... So, the first time we met I was with Kromestar at Outlook festival in 2011. It was about 7am and I was proper worse for wear...

Barely Legal: I found him perched on a log with my donny Kromestar. He was in a pretty bad way and seemed unable to walk so I offered to help him get to the artist transfer. I dunno why I like looking after people who are a self-inflicted mess but I guess I can empathise with them...

Chimpo: I thought she was walking me to her tent initially so I was like 'where's ya tent?! and she was like 'what!?' I saw her the next day while I was doing a set on the beach and she'd told me she'd only eaten Haribo for a week and nothing else, so I took her with my lot to the restaurant and made her eat bare Calamari and stuff... So we sort of both rescued each other on our first encounters. Without me, Barely might have been a bit malnourished and without her, I'd probably still be living in the woods to this day. Like a bear.

Barely Legal: Me, Chimpo and Strategy became a bit of a tag team for the rest of the festival after that and me and Chimpo definitely had a few bonding moments where we could tell we were going to end up as top mates!

Their blossoming friendship:

Barely Legal: I had just copped some turntables before that year’s Outlook Festival and told him that I was learning how to mix. We made this pledge that I wouldn't go back to Outlook again unless I got booked... We set the goals pretty high but that's what it’s all about. He lives in Manchester and I'm London based but we still chat all the time and he supported me so much in my first steps of making something out of DJing. A lot of the time I thought ‘screw this’ when certain things didn't go my way and people were throwing me off but Chimpo always got me back on track. He's such a G! We both play the same sort of stuff too so we were booked a lot for the same shows, which was sick. Then we started doing b2b's too!

Chimpo: We're fully a family now, innit. To be fair though, we were pretty much best mates from when we first met. I swear it was like the second day we were chilling together and it was like 'yeah, we're best mates now'.

Their funniest moment:

Chimpo: There's bare moments so it's hard to whittle it down to just one but the one that sticks with me is when we'd first met that Outlook. All my lot had gone to the hotel to recuperate so me and Barely stayed out together all day. We went to get some hotdogs and I was telling Barely about how some woman had died doing the dutty wine in Jamaica. She was going sick cracking up and we was on a mad giddy one! Anyway, we were eating these hot dogs and Barely’s got ketchup all over her face. I'm like 'Yo Barely, there's Ketchup on ya face!' and she's gone 'Yeh? Yeh? Ketchup, yeh?' and just slapped the hotdog on her head. There's ketchup all over her face now and she's running at people pretending to be a vampire...

Barely Legal: And then me, Chimpo and Strats are walking up towards the stages later on and I find a TV in a bush and put it on my head but a bit of electrical circuit got caught in my hair...

Chimpo: She goes to throw the TV off her head but it's taken her with it so she effectively throws herself into a bush. It was amazing.

Barely Legal: Chimpo then made a track for Terror Danjah called 'Put The TV On Ya Head' in memory of this moment and Strats made a dance move based which has now become a signature move!

Chimpo: It was one of the best days ever.

The best set they've played together:

Barely Legal: We did a two hour, back to back set in Southampton a while back. We both came off the decks like ‘yeah, we smashed that!’ We had out mate Joe Raygun hosting too and he's a buzz. We just rode off each other really well and didn't shout at each other once.

Chimpo: We were both on fire trying to keep up with each other. I swear we played about 6,000 tunes in two hours! To be fair, they were all pretty sick though. Our styles translate well and we gas each other up so we're always going sick when we play together.

The worst set they've played together:

Chimpo: There's been a couple where I've been a bit drunk and started plugging out Barely's Sertao and ejecting the CDs, forgetting how the set up works... So I've been a headache and fucked up the base. Bun Serato though, it does my head in. The worst sets have been when I've been faffing about with the technical set up but that's not ruined the actual set, they've all been sick. We're the best in the world so all our sets are brilliant.

Barely Legal: Yeah, he's been known to eject my Serato CDs and lose them during a set. Once we had an emotional moment where we had words and got deep mid set, nearly forgetting to DJ but remembering just in time before the tune finished. Don't worry though, we dome it now.

The best thing about Barely Legal, according to Chimpo:

Chimpo: She's hilarious. She's got bare positive energy and she's an amazing DJ. She's proper tiny, which is sick 'cos she can get away with bare stuff like a mischievous kid. There's a world of things. If she was proper fit like me then she'd have it all! Most important thing though is that she's a top mate. She's always been there when I've been down and she's mad loyal. It feels like we've been mates from forever so it's strange to think we didn't know each other a few years ago. Yeah, she's a top G. My little sis.

The best thing about Chimpo, according to Barely Legal:

Barely Legal: Basically he cares nuff and is the most loyal person I know. I don't want to get too emo but he's definitely my top human. If I ever need to talk to someone he's never not been there and he's the most fun to be around. Just full of positive vibes and always up for causing trouble with me. He's also proper big compared to me too, which is sick ‘cos I'm proper tiny so together we look mental.

What the future holds:

Chimpo: Shit, I just want to catch up with Barely. She's doming it. She's well on the way to being one of the biggest DJs in the world. I reckon she should get a like a prank TV show though, like Beadles About but Barely’s About. I think me and Barely would make a sick combo presenting TV and events. We're too mischievous together though so we'd probably just get in trouble and mash everything up. The sky's the limit though. We could definitely be the two most famous people on the planet. Easy. If we don't it's only because one of us has either been locked up or deported...

Barely Legal: We're just going to takeover the world together. Like what we do now but on a much larger scale, making sure everyone is having as much of a buzz in life as we are.
