Introducing...SIT (Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia)

This Saturday, in Room One we’re hosting the launch event for Rhadoo's fabric 72 mix CD. He's one of the leaders in a wave of creativity that has been growing and developing in Romania over the last decade with many of this burgeoning scene’s leading protagonists featured heavily in our club's curatorial rotations. Cristi Cons is very much one of these people; an artist formally educated in the eastern European country’s capital city, Bucharest, his considered approach to production means we’re counting him amongst the premier talents to emerge out of that part of the world. Cristi will be making the journey to DJ alongside Rhadoo this coming Saturday but, in an added twist, he will also be performing live as SIT, a collaboration with lifelong friend Vlad Caia. And seeing as this is set to be the first time SIT will be introduced to Farringdon we got a bit of conversation time in with Cristi to find out more about exactly what SIT entails. Cristi, SIT is in collaboration with Vlad Caia from what I understand you both have both been friends for much of your lives. But what exactly brought you together to collaborate more closely as SIT? We met in 2006 and slowly started working together as producers. We didn’t have a group name back then neither lots of gear but slowly we got more involved into it and decided to come up with SIT. How does the dynamic work between you two creatively? Do you find that you each have your own strengths that you work off? Working together is pretty simple. We start a session and the ideas come naturally during the process. Mostly all our tracks are done this way and it usually doesn’t take more than a few hours to finish it. Afterwards we try different arrangements and edits until we are happy with it. As we’re talking about your live set can you tell us a bit about what equipment you are going to be using for the performance? We try to have a straight forward performance setup. It consists of two notebooks, a drum machine an effects box and two midi controllers. Everything is connected to an audio mixer. The drum patterns for the performance run from the drum machine. In this way is easy to improvise and make the whole thing more dynamic. How does this compare to what you work with in the studio? It’s not that different actually. Like we said most of our tracks are recorded as Jam-sessions and later we edit them until like how they sound. How are you going to approach the live set – is it going to be more improvisational or more of a performance of the tracks you have already completed? A bit of both. We are performing with unreleased material but at the same time anything can fit together and thus is easier to have improvisation too. It’s interesting because you have been working together since 2009 but a SIT recording is still quite a rare occurrence, why is it that you’ve limited your releases? We’ve been busy with our solo projects too. Our first release on Jesus Loved You as SIT was our starting point and later on it took a while until we figured out where it would be best to release our work. The main outlet is your label Amphia can you tell us a bit about the label, about what why you started it and what you want the label to be? Being selective was the main reason to start this endeavor. It made sense to have our own imprint where we can release what we feel. Until now we released our own music and in the future we plan to collaborate with other artists that have a good approach and diversity over music. The main idea in the end is to put out as much quality music as possible. There’s a really strong visual element to how you’ve presented the music with a video for each release how important is it to link the music to imagery? It started as a way to present the release. It’s important for us to have a relation between image and sound and lots of work goes into having everything connected. Our good friend Claudiu Stefan does the physical artwork that goes in the releases and Vlad takes care of the video part. What are your future plans for SIT and the label? What can we look forward to next? We are preparing some material for a SIT release on Amphia next year. Will also follow solo releases under our names and other collaborations. We want to vary our future releases. The main idea when we started this project was to experiment a lot within our work and now we will put out music from friends and producers that will identify with us.
