To tell us a bit more about the ethos and aesthetic we can expect from the newly launched imprint, as well as providing a mix to express his identity as a DJ, label co-owner Khalid Daylami aka Daylomar took some time out to speak to WetYourSelf! residents Jacob Husley and Peter Pixel about exactly what is to come... Download: Daylomar WYS! x Unleash Podcast Who are the label owners? Myself Khalid Daylami aka Daylomar founded the label along with the two founders of the London-based party Unleash. Why did you decide to start it? After almost 5 years of holding events together we realised that we shared the same vision and decided it is time to move forward by producing our own music and expanding in that direction. Do you have any previous knowledge of running a label? Not really, and it is taking longer than expected. We have a lot of friends who run their own labels and we witness the difficulties they experience. It is a normal part of the business, but we will get there! I have confidence in our music and our style. So I’m pretty excited about learning how to formalise the process of making music through a label. What have you found to be the hardest part of getting the label started? The music itself. A lot of labels are known for a particular sound, and loving many styles of music means that it can be difficult to plan a long term direction. We would definitely like to shake things up a little. In the end we are trying to put out new and exciting music that also stands the test of time. Also, sometimes good music is not enough, finding people who share similar working tempos, musical preferences and temperaments is important. The events have grown organically, and we would like the label to grow in the same way. We work from various parts of the world as well, this makes coordination challenging but we make it work. Is there a concept behind the label? What are the musical boundaries if any? The concept is simple really; it is to have established artists that have worked closely with us over the past few years and also to channel the work of newcomers and our residents who need a platform to develop their own work. Keeping the vinyl industry growing and the momentum of the electronic music scene in general is also important to us. What artists have you got on board so far? We are still planning the next few months, Our first release will be two tracks from one of our favorites, Cesar Merveille, who is also on the line up of our showcase. Other artists so far include Mioh, Livio & Roby and myself. We will be looking to showcase our events across Europe in the future with emphasis on the artists who release with us and our residents. Vinyl versus digital what will you releasing on and what are your views on vinyl versus digital? It's a very debatable subject. I actually started DJing using a laptop, then CDs, then records, so it is the opposite of the conventional way. I think there are a lot of advantages to playing records that can’t really be measured. Its not just about learning how not to sync, the whole process of searching for music is really important. It can tend to be more challenging, time consuming and expensive to buy and play records, so you really need to know your music, which can only be a good thing. The music you collect means more to you and is of better quality because of this whole process. What we like is mostly on vinyl too, so it makes sense for us to have our music on the same format. How long time will you leave between releases? It really depends on what we receive but we are looking to have a maximum of 4 releases during the year. Have you made music videos? Not yet, that kind of work will become more realistic closer to the release date - expected to be after the summer but we would love to incorporate visual media. We already have some interesting visuals accompanying our music during our parties.
