Kölsch has curated a mix of exclusive new material for fabric presents

Stepping up for the second entry of our recently relaunched mix series, fabric presents Kölsch is a ten-track journey of exclusive new material from a pioneer of dancefloor melancholy. A mainstay on seminal German imprint Kompakt, Kölsch is responsible for developing an immersive, leftfield aesthetic now synonymous with the label. Opting for rich, cinematic palettes over monochromatism, his sound offers an alternative vision of techno, championing vivid imagery that appeals to the vast spectrum of human emotion.
“When I was approached about doing a fabric mix, I was in awe. It's always been a dream of mine to be involved in the series, since the first time I visited the legendary club in 2002. I vividly remember walking in to Room One, feeling the soundsystem and the vibe. I had never been to a club like this. Filled with likeminded people, with a deep understanding for music. An urge for something new was everywhere, and it was the first place I realised that the DJ was encouraged, even egged on to play only the newest or rarest records. People weere there for that. I've been so lucky to play fabric all night long a few times. It is a very delicate affair, and one of the only places in the world that allows the artist to really play deep and work the system. The room has a story, and you are playing a soundtrack to that. My fabric mix, was to be an ode to Room One. In order to find that intimacy, I spent pretty much all my flights between shows, immersing myself into sound. I wanted the mix to be an emotional reflection of a night in Room One. It had to feel deep, unpolished and raw. Having done all the stems, I took it back to my studio, and recorded it as a live set. I took a few takes to get it right. I also ran all the stems through my Allen and Heath v6 (the same valve mixer as in Room One) to get the right Analogue sound to them. There’s a piece of fabric in all of my flights.”

A common dilemma for the touring artist is the question of how to use their travel time productively, so for this mix, Kölsch presents ten new productions inspired by and named after flights from his gig schedule. Drawing from the routine experience of flying from show to show, each track imagines its own sonic world from solitary journeys at 30,000 feet. Employing a colourful tapestry of carefully arranged sonic textures, he levitates his way through 60 minutes of blissful hypnotism. At once subtle and expansive, his productions offer a glimpse into a dreamy, visceral world full of transcendent moments.

Building on a constant, but gentle line of tension, his track selections tread the line between melancholic and uplifting, never straying too far into either. Microscopic percussive details roll through sprawling sonic backdrops whilst animated glitches form subtle melodic leads. Never one to command attention with force, he explores the space between minute sonic detailing and vast acoustics to mesmeric effect.

fabric presents Kölsch provides an autonomous approach to the mix series, allowing the artist complete freedom over his sonic narrative. Meditative and peculiar, it looks towards sweeping landscapes and blue skies for a voyage into the depths of his singularly emotive sound.
