James Lavelle brings UNKLE: AI to Farringdon in celebration of our 20th birthday. As our first FABRICLIVE resident, Lavelle’s history with us dates back to our formative years, when he played biweekly on Friday nights for the first five years of our lifespan. This October, we invite him back for a double header to open our birthday month, where he’s set to perform live as UNKLE, before hosting his own curated FABRICLIVE night. Over the course of his career Lavelle has honed a truly singular musical identity, crossing downtempo hip-hop and club-inclined breakbeats via leftfield electronica and indie rock. This has mostly been manifested through UNKLE, the acclaimed band and live act he’s fronted since the mid-90s. Lavelle was also the mastermind behind Mo’Wax, a label that helped spearhead the UK’s flourishing trip-hop movement through seminal records like DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing…’ The revered imprint was the primary home for Lavelle’s music through UNKLE’s early years, while more recently he’s channelled his sound through his other labels, Surrender All and Songs For The Def. Over the last few years Lavelle’s expanded his palette to cross experimentalist trip hop via dance-driven breaks and sprawling orchestral arrangements, a style that’s best distilled on the excellent two-part album series ‘The Road: Part I’ and ‘The Road: Part II / Lost Highway’. This October, Lavelle kicks off our 20th birthday month with an exclusive live performance as UNKLE: AI, a new audio-visual project showcasing the latest evolution of his musical world.
