A Quick Chat with Breakage

This Friday Jack Beats are taking over Room 1 with their first instalment of Jack Beats Loves. Joining them on a bill that also includes Brodinski, Drop The Lime and Martelo, is Breakage, a producer who’s straddled the tempo gulf between drum & bass and dubstep with critical acclaim. His anthem ‘Hard,’ which was vocalled by Newham Generals, still gets airplay and still gets wheeled out on dancefloors across London. With his single ‘Fighting Fire,’ which features the vocal stylings of Jess Mills, bothering the midweek charts in the best possible way we briefly caught up with Breakage to find out just what he’s been up to at the moment, what we can expect from his set and touch upon the delicate issue of his recent preoccupation with eggs and Eastenders... With your sophomore album ‘Foundation’ released last year, what are you working on at the moment? Is there any news on a forthcoming follow up? I’m currently working on another album, but still in the early stages Your track ‘Fighting Fire’ featuring Jess Mills was released this week and we’ve just heard that it’s reached number 24 in the mid-week charts – did you expect it to be received so well by a commercial audience? I never really expect anything from my tunes to be honest, I just hope someone likes them… the fact that it has done so well is great though, really chuffed about it! As a producer with an eclectic repertoire and seeming perfectly comfortable bouncing between and around the 140bpm and 170bpm marks, what are your thoughts on these underground sounds becoming more popular and influencing pop contemporaries? I think it’s good for the most part, as it brings more people into the scene. I think the only drawback could be that artists will think it’s the only route to take and make music they're not happy with You are very much an in demand producer and have worked with a variety of artists on both your second album ‘Foundation’ and when remixing tracks, is there someone you are still very keen to work with but haven’t had the chance to? There’s a whole world of people I’d love to work with! It’s just finding people that will spawn interesting results and good results is the hard part of it all What can we expect from your set at fabric this Friday? I’m not sure myself to be honest, a bit of everything? Are there any tracks you can’t stop playing at the moment and refuse to take out of your record box? Youngman – Slaughter Finally, following you on Twitter it’s clear that apart from music, your two great obsessions are eggs and Eastenders...care to elaborate? Hahahahahaha!!! I had an egg obsession for a while there, I went from hating them to kind of liking them to eating them every day to now being at peace with them… and as for Easties, it's the best worst show known to man!!
