Audio: Zero T mixes deadly breaks with a touch of funk

For almost two decades, Zero T has been one of drum & bass’ most prominent voices. The Irish producer named Cian McCann has championed practically every strand of the genre’s varying styles through his career, from the funk-driven sounds of his debut Cheap Shots LP through to tougher heads-down fare for the likes of Metalheadz and Dispatch. For all the variety on his back catalogue, one common thread tying McCann’s music is his razor-sharp production quality with an ear pointed firmly towards the club, a style he showed us on the tempo-switching FABRICLIVE 52 album in 2010. While McCann’s typically always shied from the spotlight, recently he’s been at the scene’s forefront: earlier this year he put out the excellent Little Pieces LP via Dispatch, and has worked an ongoing collaboration with Beta 2 for the Metalheadz-backed project Searchlight. He joins us when both labels host FABRICLIVE on 14th December, so he sent us a mix in advance of the session. On his mix, he eases through a style we’ve come to know him best for: deadly breaks with a touch of funk, delivered with confidence at every tempo that fits.
