Audio: Aries shares a dub-affected junglist workout for Jungle Mania

Drum & bass, jungle, and reggae are all rooted in sound system culture, but these days it’s rare to hear anyone who knows their way round all three. Few have been as devoted to merging this umbrella of styles than Aries. Originally hailing from Birmingham, his career started in 1990 during the emergence of the UK’s jungle movement, a sound he would champion early on via his regular pirate radio broadcasts. He remained a key flagbearer for the sound throughout the 90s, becoming a famed DJ on his hometown’s rave scene. By the 2000s he was putting out records on labels like Congo Natty, Dread and V Recordings, fusing cutting jungle and drum & bass with an inclination for reggae and dub. He’s also one of the figures behind Chopstick Dubplate, the UK collective best known for their endless string of self-released ragga jungle dubs. As he kicks off the Bank Holiday in full force with the Jungle Mania crew this Friday, he sent us a mix showcasing what he does best: racing, dub-affected, jungle and drum & bass.
