This Friday New York’s Throne of Blood label takeover Room Three with an array of artists they’ve backed on the label. It’s a first for us as much as it’s a first for them and in the run up to them taking the long cross Atlantic flight we’ve been shining a light on some of the artists they’re putting on over the past few weeks presenting mixes from Luv*Jam, Populette and (below) Remzin & Mlle Caro. With all that said though it feels like maybe somewhere along the line we skipped the essential history lesson though, so we asked label boss James Friedman to fill us in a little.
“Throne of Blood has been around since 2006,” he offers. “It was the brainchild of members of The Rapture and myself and was originally conceived as a vehicle for releasing the singles and remixes from their second LP, the Paul Epworth/Ewan Pearson-produced
Pieces of the People We Love. As it turns out we actually released the LP version of that record too along with three singles.”
“After joining the Kompakt Distribution family in 2008, Throne of Blood surged back to life with a growing roster of artists,” Friedman continues. “Beginning with local NYC upstart Dances With White Girls things branched out quickly with an Italo-inflected release from Zombi (aka Steve Moore of LIES fame) and some uberdeep techhouse from veteran John Selway.”
Subsequently ToB has housed projects from blog phenom Bicep, NYC powerhouse Harkin & Raney, Rapture’s engineer, JK, Mugwump from Belgium and Paul Woolford’s Ford Inc project and has even spawned a pretty nifty sub label simply called Let’s Play House, which, rather unsurprisingly, gives voice to house focused artists like Runway, Dead Rose Music Company, Toby Tobias and more.
Parisians Remain and Mlle Caro have also released music through ToB. Part of the French capital’s fertile scene that has given the world names like Ivan Smagghe, Chloe and Jennifer Cardini, the duo released ‘Heat’ b/w ‘Rogue’ in September of last year, a release ToB described as “a new step forward: after a series of classically oriented 12“s with deep debts owed to old school Detroit and Chicago vibes, Remain & Mlle Caro’s release stands out as a thoroughly modern model of analog dancefloor ammunition.”
It’s kind of a stylistic motif in their promo mix too, whilst the sounds they’ve spun together are undoubtedly informed by eons of music past, it all feels incredibly current and it’s another great example of why we’re excited for the ToB guys to grace the mezzanine this Friday…
