Catching Up With.. Filthy Dukes + Stream 'Whether With Me' EP

If there's one word that can be used to accurately describe Tim and Olly, members of Filthy Dukes, it’s visionary. For most artists, throwing parties, touring the globe and regularly releasing tunes would be enough, but apparently that's not the case for Filthy Dukes who recently have been switching things up the studio. It’s no secret the pair have been exploring deeper dancefloor territory of late and as Room Two warms its floor for their Kill Em All set next Friday alongside Ewan Pearson, Daniel Avery and New Build (live) - finally we can break the silence and give you the heads up on all the cool new stuff they've been working on. Today we’ve been lucky enough to our hands on their brand new ‘Whether With Me' EP available to stream ahead of its release date May 6th on Kill Em All. Garnering support from Andrew Weatherall, Brodinski, People Get Real and more, it's a dark four track dancefloor weapon which you can use after the jump: Hi guys. You’re back next week for the Kill Em All return. How do you like to keep things fresh for the folk who come and see you regularly play here? O: I guess that is all about record selection, we both tend to buy new music on a weekly basis so our sets are never the same. The Kill Em All line ups are always different too, new bands or DJs at each event. T: We're playing Room 2 this time and we've kept the line up simple so we can control the music. Kill Em All is lucky to have Daniel Avery as a resident, he really is a very talented DJ and producer. Between the three of us we can dictate the music and keep it 'Kill Em All'. It's about reminding yourself about the reasons we started. Finding new music and classics that really move you and playing them to people. Simple really. There's some great new music out there at the moment. Very excited about the new SMD and Duke Dumont plus we will be playing lots of our new tunes and remixes. Dan has some big new tunes for the world to hear. Room 1 will be amazing. You can always guarantee those guys will be bringing the party and a bag of fresh tunes. Tell us about the deeper dancefloor territory your into? Was there a particular moment when the vision changed or has it been burning up slower than that? O: I think it's been coming for a while. Kill Em All became famous for indie dance thing but we have always been interested in all sorts of music from deep house to post-punk, techno to electronica. Our album was fairly schizophrenic from brighter pop moments to darker krautrock and I think we have moved further into the dark side as we have got older. I'm sure age must have something to do with it, not to sound like old men but there is a time when you shift a gear and the music that interests us now is deeper, darker and less frenetic. That's not to say less energetic, just a change in how this manifests itself, both in terms of music we make and play. We've been booking the Ed Banger guys for a while, they're back in room 1 this time, and their sound has developed and changed a lot too. That is the beauty of dance music, it's constantly developing. It shifts and morphs itself all the time. Tell us about your upcoming ‘Whether With Me EP’ out on Kill Em All next month? How does it differ from your previous releases? O: It’s deeper, darker, better. Previously we haven't always made music for the dance floor. T: I feel we're approaching things from a completely different place. This music is much more personal. It almost feels like we started from scratch with the new stuff. Getting back to the basics of what makes electronica, house and techno. Also, after years of DJing, you can see how simple great music can be. There's also a freedom from putting stuff out on your own label. If you had to reference particular artists/ labels that inspired your decision to go deeper who would you list? O: I am playing and listening to a lot of Tim Paris, Dj T, Midland and John Talabot and in some ways we have returned to the people that first got us excited by electronic music like Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe and Trevor Jackson. T: There are definitely references to early Warp, Drexciya, the dance music coming out of Chicago and Detroit in the 80s, growing up listening to Spacemen 3 and Chemical Brothers. Once again, it's the simplicity that often works in great dance music. I think it's almost an extension of the darker tracks on the first album which were influenced by artists like Frank Tovey and DAF. I'm loving the output from labels like World Unknown, Kompakt, Rush Hour and artists like Cosmin TRG and Martyn. Tell us what the new releases/ remixes are coming up on Kill Em All that we should know about? T: We have some great stuff coming up. We've got four Kill Em All acts to remix each of the Whether With Me tracks which is sounding ace. The Countach has delivered two tracks of 'slo mo odd ball techno'(his words) with some deep remixes. He's had some great support from Ivan Smagghe, Ewan Pearson and Kiki amongst others; it's deserved. He really is a great talent. People Get Real return with two deep cuts. They're brilliant DJs and it's really transcended into their production. We'll also be putting out an EP from Pyramid Club. Dan put one their tracks on his Divided Love mixture and we all love it. It just sounds very Kill Em All to us. They are working on a new live show that I’m sure will see the dark of night at fabric in the future. Also a few more lined up from In Fields and some friends. It's going to be a busy and exciting year for Kill Em All Records. What new faces should we be looking out for? Shine the light on the new talent not to miss? T: I'm loving Photonz at the moment, Dan put me onto them. Really exciting music. 'Crunchy psych techno'. Check out the How The Other Half Lives label. Loads of quality music coming from them. Raudive is making some very exciting sounds. Barnt is creating some fantastic music, the most recent Comeme EP is worth checking out. Labels like Throne of Blood, Clouded Vision, Join Our Club, Meant, Uncanny Valley & Rawax. Also loving Jimmy Edgar right now and the Raid Over Moscow EP on Turbo. It's feeling like electroclash is about to rear it's head for a second time. We’re disheartened by the April showers. What cheers you up no end? O: Game of Thrones and Coconut water T: Went to see my friend run in the marathon the other day. All the crowds showing so much support for the runners put a massive smile on face and proud to be a Londoner. What are you looking forward to most about this year both in personal and music life? O: Festivals season is always good for us; my girlfriend is living in Oslo so I will be playing out there a bit too. T: We have loads of music to release so really looking forward to getting it out there. The response from other artist and DJs to this EP has been amazing and, as always, seeing people dance to your tunes whilst you play them at fabric still requires a little pinch on the arm. Apart from that I'll be head down making tunes and remixing as well as thinking about a live show 'mk II'. In my spare time I’ll be cooking curry and popping home to see the folks for walks along the seafront with the dog. When the weather gets better, of course. Finally, how are you looking forward to 4th May and how do you plan to spread yourselves across the rooms for the night? O: Ewan Pearson is a definite musical hero so will be dancing around to him, New Build are a frankensteins monster of Hot ChiP and Lcd Soundystem will be great, their album is fantastic. Throne of Blood room we are also really excited about theIR release some great music so will be checking out what is new from them. T: I always spend the whole night there and I try to catch a bit of everyone. It makes it a long night but I love it. Always excited to hear what Brodinski is playing. His brand of techno is spot on for room 1 and he always smashes it. I haven't heard Gingy & Bordello DJ together but if their productions and mixes are anything to go by they will be very much at home in fabric. Pedro and Riton always bring the party. Really looking forward to New Build & Ewan in room 2. As Olly said Mr Pearson has always been a great inspiration and his sets always deliver. Will definitely be spending some time in Room 3. Been playing many tracks from this label over the last year or so. It's going to be a busy night.
